Muff, Bears tame Idaho State Sunday
2/28/2021 4:47:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Taylor Muff was in the zone in a three set sweep over Idaho State
POCATELLO, Idaho – Northern Colorado tamed a pesky Idaho State team on Sunday with the 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 26-24) sweep to return to the win column.
Taylor Muff had herself a day in the sweep finishing with 16 kills on a .225 hitting. She added in 10 digs and three aces. The double-double is the seventh of the year and the third straight for her.
The theme of the day for the Bears was to jump out to early leads in each set and hold off late runs from Idaho State.
UNC went up 4-0 to start the match thanks in part to a pair of Muff kills and led by as much as six at 23-16. ISU charged back to make it 24-22 UNC before you know who, Muff, recorded her seventh kill of the set to end it at 25-22.
In the second set, Northern Colorado led 5-2 early on and extended its lead to five at 20-15 as freshman Lauren Strain showed no mercy on the Bengals front line with four kills in the set. ISU again roared back with a 7-2 run to even the set at 22.
Closing time in the set turned into the Muff, Strain and Kailey Jo Ince show as they each had a kill to help push UNC over the edge 27-25.
Like the first set, the tough serving of Kyndall Feather set the tone for the Bears to jump out to a 3-1 lead. UNC went on a 5-0 run later on in the set once again with Feather toeing the service line to increase the lead to five.
That lead stretch to seven at 21-14 off a pair of Muff aces. The Bengals were down, but not out as they charged back to tie the set at 23.
Muff's 16th kill of the day put Northern Colorado up 25-24 and a poor set by Idaho State gave the Bears the sweep.
What They Said
Head Coach Lyndsey Oates
"We were good in end game situations today. We gave up too many attacking errors, but we were able to manage the end game really well. We also served tough tonight that took them out of system and gave us the looks we wanted because of it. The challenge will be to turn it around and make the adjustments tomorrow. We have to be sharper and lower error. Our left sides had a good match and Daisey set a good match."
Stat of the Match
Serving tough is a staple of Northern Colorado volleyball and once again the team did so on Sunday afternoon. The Bears had 11 aces, led by Taylor Muff and Laura Katarzynski's three each.
