UNC wrestling fell to Oklahoma 30-7 on Sunday
GREELEY, Colo. – For the second consecutive week, Northern Colorado Wrestling took on a top 25 opponent and showed they will not back down against any competition. The Bears welcomed No. 17 Oklahoma to Bank of Colorado Arena Sunday afternoon for a Big 12 dual.
UNC picked up a pair of wins at 133 and 141 lbs from Mosha Schwartz and Andrew Alirez.
No. 25 Schwartz's win was an upset based upon rankings, although he has never lost to No. 8 Tony Madrigal of Oklahoma in his career. Madrigal earned the upper hand early in the bout with a takedown less than halfway through the first period. Schwartz earned his escape quickly to end the first period down 2-1.
The second period was key in the victory as he earned the full two minutes of ride time. Down 2-1 entering the third period Schwartz made the quick escape and did a great job avoiding Madrigal's shots and a takedown. The fans at Bank of Colorado Arena rose to cheer on Schwartz in the final seconds of the 3-2 win.
No. 9 Alirez stayed undefeated for the Bears and picked up an extra point a 15-5 major decision over Zach Zeamer of OU. He recorded six takedowns in his dual.
While those were the only wins for UNC, Jace Koelzer, Chris Sandoval and Robert Winters Jr wrestled well to gain confidence moving forward. Koelzer lost 3-2 by decision while Sandoval and Winters Jr fell in overtime.
