Andrew Alirez earned UNC's highest finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational
LAS VEGAS – Greeley native Andrew Alirez earned the UNC wrestling program's highest finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational this weekend. He finished in second place for the 141 lbs weight class.
After a strong showing Friday, Alirez faced No. 3 seed Chad Red of Nebraska in the morning semifinals. He earned an escape late in the second period and won the match with a takedown midway through the third. The 3-1 decision set up a match against Big 12 foe and top seed Clay Carlson of South Dakota State.
The action was fast and furious in the championship bout. Alirez earned the early lead with a takedown less than 30 seconds into the dual. They entered the second period all square at three with Alirez choosing to start on bottom. He not only earned the escape but recorded a takedown with 19 second left to lead 6-3. Carlson closed strong with an escape and then a pair of takedowns in the final minute leading to a pin at 6:55.
Three other UNC wrestlers earned the opportunity to wrestle on Saturday as well. Alan Clothier (197 lbs), Jace Koelzer (125 lbs) and Chris Sandoval (149 lbs) all dropped their consultation round of eight match. Koelzer lost by 9-4 decision to Jake Ferri of Kent State, Sandoval had a 13-8 decision to No. 7 seed Mitch Moore of Oklahoma and Clothier a 3-1 decision to Evan Bockman of Utah Valley.
