Thimsen Makes Track and Field History on Saturday

UNC indoor track and field had three podium on Saturday
POCATELLO, Idaho – Northern Colorado track and field picked up a pair of silver medals and a bronze on the final day of the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championship. Tyler Thimsen took second place in the men's triple jump for the best finish in program history and Antoine Coates finished second in the 200 meter. Meanwhile, the men's 4x400 team took third place to close out the meet.
Thimsen made UNC history with his 14.80m taking second place in the triple jump. It is the best finish for the program at the Big Sky Indoor Championship in the triple jump. It was also a PR for Thimsen.
Antoine Coates made it to the finals of the 200 and 400 meters. He ran a 21.53 for second place in the 200. Meanwhile, in the 400 he finished eighth with a time of 49.28.
Coates led off the Bears 4x400 team to go with Kyle Thomas, Deondre Ritter and Ibro Soumah. Northern Colorado just edged out Montana State and Southern Utah by 0.01 seconds for third place by crossing the line at 3:18.35.
Greg Laday missed out on the podium by one spot taking fourth place in the men's 60 meter dash by running a 6.83.
Dorian Nesby competed in the women's 60 meter dash finishing with a 7.69 to place seventh.
Semaye Johnson and Kelsi Schuetz each finished in fifth place in their respective finals. Johnson ran in the 60 hurdles crossing the finish line at 8.72. Schuetz was one of two Bears in the 400 meter finals with a time of 56.57.
Teammate Gabrielle Ellis finished seventh at 58.69.
Schuetz and Ellis were joined by Viktorija Osipenko and Mackenzie Pettit on the 4x400 team that placed fifth. The quartet ran a 3:49.25 beating Weber State by 0.01 seconds.
Three other Bears earned points on Saturday in Josh Campbell, Nene Phenix and Kylie Chavez. Campbell placed eighth in the 3000 meter with a time of 8:24.58. Phenix and Chavez finished sixth and eighth respectively in the women's triple jump. Phenix recorded a PR of 11.92m while Chavez had a leap of 11.82m.
Coach Angel's Thoughts
"Yesterday we had some peaks and valleys as a team. Today we competed like champions with the pride, guts and determination of a UNC Bear. The difference today was that these Bears came to make a statement, they were fearless, and they didn't back down or let anyone or anything stand in their way. especially themselves."
What's Ahead
It's on to the outdoor season for UNC track and field. The first meet of the year comes on March 12-14 at the UNLV Invite.
