Bears Show Improvment, Effort Against Bison

Northern Colorado dropped its dual against North Dakota State
Northern Colorado wrestling left it all on the mat Saturday afternoon, dropping the dual 25-12 to North Dakota State. After UNC won the first match, NDSU won the six of the next seven matches, earning bonus points in two of the wins.
UNC jumped out ahead to quick lead behind Brody Lamb's first period fall on Dylan Droegemueller. The 141-pounder got the takedown on Droegemueller and turned him for the fall at 1:17. The Bears were were up 6-0 out of the gate.
In the 149-pound match, Ethan Leake faced Jaden Van Maanen. After the first period, Van Maanen led Leake 2-0 and added another takedown in the second period.
Leake was able to get the reversal on Van Maanen and the score was 5-2 after the second period. Leake came up with the late takedown with 24 seconds left to tie the match at 5. The two would go to overtime, with Van Maanen scoring the 2-point, nearfall in the third overtime period for the sudden victory, 8-5. The Bears lead was cut to 6-3.
Jordan Robison would battle No. 16 Jared Franek at 157-pounds. Franek would get five takedown on Robison and would accumulate 4:39 minutes of riding time against Robison. He went on to win the 14-2 major decision and NDSU pulled ahead of UNC, 7-6.
At 165-pounds, Macoy Flanagan went against No. 10 Andrew Fogarty. In the first period, Fogarty managed to get the fall on Flanagan at 1:10. NDSU now had a 13-6 lead over the Bears.
Xavier Vasquez made his first career dual start, wrestling down a weight class at 174-pounds. He faced Austin Brenner. After two periods, Brenner built a 5-0 lead over in the match. Vasquez did not give up and toke down Brenner in the third period to pull with two at 5-3. Brenner would hold on with a reversal and riding time, along with a penalty for the 9-3 decision win. The Bison lead was now up to 10 over UNC.
Now in the 184-pound match, No. 22 Alan Clothier would face Noah Cressell. After an early takedown by Cressell, Clothier responded with his own to hold a 3-2 advantage after the first period. Clothier finished a shot in the second period and got the takedown to lead Cressell, 5-3. Clothier would rack up two more takedowns in the third period, adding a penalty point and riding time to win a 12-5 decision over Cressell. Clothier's win pulled the Bison back to trail, 16-9
Sethan Bogulski would get the call at 197-pounds against Cordell Eaton. Eaton would record two takedowns and went on to defeat Bogulski in a 5-3 decision. NDSU was back up by 10 over the Bears.
Robert Winters Jr. faced No. 27 Brandon Metz in the 285-pound bout. Mezs would lead 2-1 after the first period, but Winters tied the bout up at two in the second. In the third period, Metz managed to earn the escape after starting down and had accumulated 1:09 minutes of riding time. Metz won a 4-2 decision over Winters to extend the Bison lead to 22-9, putting the dual out of reach for the Bears.
In the 125-pound match, Jace Koelzer went against McGwire Midkiff. The two wrestled to scoreless tie after the first period. Koelzer would jump ahead in the second quarter with an escape for the 1-0 lead. In the final period, Koelzer scored a takedown and a two-point, nearfall to win a 5-2 decision over Midkiff.
The main event of the dual was the final match, as No. 18 Mosha Schwartz faced No. 10 Cam Sykora in the 133-pound match. Scoring was frequent in the first period, as Schwartz notched two takedowns, a reversal and a two-point, nearfall. Sykora countered with a takedown and a two-point nearfall to leave the score 8-6 in favor of
Schwartz. In the second period, Sykora earned a takedown, but Schwartz would get the escape and the match went to the third tied at nine. Schwartz would take the lead on a stalling penalty on Sykora, but he had already had enough riding time for the bonus. The match went to overtime tied at 10. Sykora scored the takedown on Schwartz at 33 second to win the 12-10 sudden victory.
NDSU closed out the dual with the 25-12 win. UNC record fell to 1-6 in duals and 1-4 in Big 12 match ups.

What's Ahead?
Northern Colorado will host Cal Poly in the team's final home dual on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. The dual will be senior day for three Bears including, Sean Cannon, Austin Matthews and Sethan Bogulski.
