Alexis Chapman scored 20 points off the bench for UNC in its 69-65 win over Weber State
OGDEN, Utah – Behind the spark of Alexis Chapman off the bench Northern Colorado women's basketball picked up a 69-65 win over Weber State Saturday afternoon. The road win improves UNC's record to 9-10 on the year and 5-5 in Big Sky play.
Chapman scored 20 points to lead the Bears in 25 minutes off the bench. She was one of three Bears to finish the game in double figures scoring.
Northern Colorado shot 35.7 percent in the first quarter and was 1-for-14 to start the second quarter before Chapman caught fire. She scored 10 points in the second helping the Bears. UNC finished the quarter shooting 5-for-9. Chapman's 3-pointer just before the buzzer gave UNC a 28-27 lead at the half as they closed it on an 11-2 run.
The Bears offense woke up in the second half shooting 50.0 percent in it.
UNC grew its lead to 10 points by the midway point of the fourth quarter, but Weber State never gave in staying in the game by making free throws. The Wildcats went 12-of-15 from the charity stripe in the final quarter, but the Bears were just as good to secure the win.
Jasmine Gayles made 10 of the team's 13 free throws in the fourth quarter.
What They Said
Head Coach Jenny Huth
"Four games in eight days is tough. I liked the match up with Ali on Kayla Watkins of Weber State for us to start the game. Ali helps Jasmine if needed to bring the ball up and finds Alisha well on offense and she brings urgency. For Alexis, we need her to score consistently for us and it helped to have her off the bench today and kept her out of foul trouble. It's important that all eleven players are ready, I believe in all our kids but some are playing at their potential and some are not. We are working hard at being our best selves and our best in March! Urgency, togetherness and focus are key."
Stat of the Game
Basketball is a simple game sometimes, it comes down to makes and misses. The Bears struggled in the first half shooting 30.6 percent, but turned it around and shot 50.0 percent in the second half to pull away from Weber State.
Game Notes
- Alisha Davis had another stat sheet stuffing performance with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists, a steal and a career-high-tying five blocks.
- The Bears had four players finish the game with six or more rebounds. Davis led the team with nine while Jasmine Gayles and Micayla Isenbart chipped in seven apiece.
- Northern Colorado held the Wildcats to 31.7 percent shooting and just three made 3-pointers.
- Ten of Gayles' 14 points came from the free throw line Saturday.
