Defense, Big Second Half Lead Bears Over Hornets

UNC men's basketball stayed undefeated at home Thursday night
GREELEY – Northern Colorado basketball used a 20-4 run over a seven minute stretch to stay undefeated at home this season with a 71-52 win over Sacramento State. The Bears improve to 11-5 on the season and 4-1 in Big Sky play.
Sacramento State entered the game as the topped ranked defense in the Big Sky allowing just 53.6 points per game and holding opponents to 3.7 made 3-pointers a game. That didn't slow down the Bears on Thursday night as they scored 71 points and made 10 threes.
Trent Harris caught fire early for the Bears making four 3-point shots in the first half including his first three attempts. His 12 points led all players at the break as UNC held a 33-30 lead.
Harris finished the game as UNC's leading scorer with 14 points. He was one of three Bears to score in double figures.
Sacramento State came out and took the lead early in the second half, but the Bears came back tying the game at 40 with 13:13 left.
UNC went on their 20-4 run after that to put the game away.

While the focus was on Sacramento State's defense coming into the game it was UNC's that stepped up for the win. The Bears entered Thursday's contest as the second ranked defense in the Big Sky and proved in holding the Hornets to 52 points including only 22 in the second half.
Game Notes
- Jonah Radebaugh moved into 17th place on the program scoring list his 13-point effort. He now has 1,081 points for his career. He added six assists, five rebounds and a steal.
- Five different Bears made a 3-pointer on the night. Trent Harris led the team with four while Sam Masten made three and Bodie Hume, Matt Johnson, and Rodrick McCobb each made one.
- UNC forced Sacramento State into 15 turnovers leading to 19 points for the Bears.
- The Bears out-shot the Hornets 48.0 percent to 39.6.
- Northern Colorado gave assistant coach Ken DeWeese a nice birthday present by earning the win.

A pair of road teams picked up a win on Thursday in Northern Arizona and Weber State. NAU, Northern Colorado's next opponent, won at Southern Utah 75-72. WSU beat its rival Idaho State 76-68 in overtime. UNC now sits half a game behind Montana for first place in the Big Sky.

Northern Colorado closes the weekend by hosting Northern Arizona for Kids Day on Saturday, January 18 at 2 pm. All kids, 13 and under receive free entry into the game with the purchase of an adult ticket!
