Men's Basketball Falls to Northern Arizona
1/18/2020 4:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Despite good looks all game long UNC men's basketball was unable to make shots on Saturday
GREELEY – It was a day where the shots would not fall for Northern Colorado as they shot 33.8 percent and fell to Northern Arizona 64-58.
The game started out strong for UNC as they jumped out to a quick 9-3 run by the first media timeout, but then the shooting woes began. Despite struggling to score their defense kept them in the game and down 32-28 at the break.
Trailing during the first part of the second half, UNC went on an 11-0 run over a three-minute span near the midway point to take the lead. Matt Johnson led the charge during it scoring nine of the 11 points on a trio of 3-pointers.
Johnson led the team with 17 points going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. His performance helped him break out of a slump during Big Sky play as he was only averaging 4.2 points per contest.
Northern Colorado extended the lead to as much as 10 points with 5:50 remaining.
NAU worked its way back into the game from that point and closed it on a 20-4 run.
What They Said
Stat of the Game
Basketball can be a simple and fickle game like it was for the Bears on Saturday. The Bears had good looks throughout the game but only shot 33.8 percent.
Game Notes
- UNC did a good job not turning the ball over finishing with just six. Only one of those turnovers came in the second half.
- Jonah Radebaugh is now tied for ninth in the program's record book for career assists with Knute Peterson (1982-85). Both men have 273 for their careers. Radebaugh had four on the night to go with 11 points, seven rebounds and a steal.
- Northern Colorado held NAU to just three made 3-point field goals showing why they are one of the best 3-point defensive teams in the nation.
