No. 8 Cowboys Ride Past Bears

Northern Colorado faced a tough dual against a highly-ranked Oklahoma State team
STILLWATER, Okla.- Northern Colorado wrestling fell to No. 8 Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon, 36-3. The Cowboys won nine of 10 bouts, scoring bonus points in six.
"It was a tough dual today. I think our guys competed much harder," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "We were out-matched in some bouts. Mosha [Schwartz] showed a lot of heart and was able to grind out a hard win."
The dual started at 125-pounds, as Jace Koelzer took the mat against No. 4 Nick Piccininni. In the first period, Piccininni jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Koelzer with a takedown and four-point, near-fall. Piccininni added two takedowns and an escape to lead Koelzer 11-1. During the final period, Piccinninni fired-off four takedowns and added riding time for the 20-5 tech fall over Koelzer. OSU raced out to a 5-0 lead in the dual.
No. 17 Mosha Schwartz faced No. 16 Reece Witcraft at 133-pounds and the two had an aggressive first period. Witcraft had four takedowns and Schwartz had four escapes, with on takedown to leave the score at 8-6. The scoring slowed down in the second period, with Schwartz notching a takedown on Witcraft to pull within one at 9-8. Schwatz recorded two escapes in the final period and came up with the key takedown late in the match to earn an 12-11 decision win over Witcraft. Schwartz's win cut the Cowboy lead to 5-3.
In the 141-pound match, Chris Sandoval battle No. 16 Dusty Hone. After one period, Hone had a 2-0 lead and added another takedown on Sandoval, along with a stalling penalty point and an escape to lead 6-0. Sandoval could not get anything going in the final period and Hone added another stalling penalty point to the 8-0 major decision. OSU was now in front of UNC 9-3.
The 149-pound bout was a ranked matchup between No. 17 Andrew Alirez and No. 3 Boo Lewallen. After Lewallen got a takedown, Alirez struck back with the reverse to tie the match. Lewallen escaped at the end of the period to take the lead, but Alirez would return the favor in the second period to tie the match at three. In the final period, Lewallen started with an escape and then pilled on a takedown and a four-point near-fall, adding riding time for the 11-4 decision. OSU extend the lead to 12-3.
Now at 157-pounds, Nathan Moore would take on No. 16 Wyatt Sheets. Sheets would take the lead after one period with a takedown. He added another takedown in the second period along with a two-point near-fall, an escape and a stalling penalty on Moore to lead 8-0. Sheets would go on to win a 17-4 major decision and the lead for the Cowboys grew to 16-3.
Macoy Flanagan faced No. 9 Travis Wittlake at 165-pounds and the match did not get past the first period. Wittlake tallied three, four-point near-falls against Flanagan and a takedown to earn a 16-1 tech fall. OSU was now up 21-3.
At 174-pounds, Billy Higgins battled Andrew Shomers. Higgins trailed 2-0 after the first period and the deficit grew to 5-0 after two. In the third period, Shomers added another takedown and Higgins was hit with a stalling penalty. Adding on the riding time bonus, Shomers won the bout, 9-0 by major decision over Higgins and the Cowboys clinched the dual at 25-3.
No. 28 Alan Clothier would go against Anthony Montalvo in the 184-pound match. Clothier struck first with a takedown, but Montalvo would get the escape and score his own takedown to take the lead. Montalvo picked up the reversal on Clothier to start the second period and give him enough of a cushion for the rest of the match. Clothier dropped the match 6-3 after Montalvo added on the riding time bonus and OSU was up 28-3.
In the 197-pound match, Sethan Bogulski faced No. 11 Dakota Geer. Geer would lead 6-0 after the first period and put the match away in the second. He scored four takedowns and a four-point near-fall on Bogulski to win a 19-3 tech fall at 4:35. The Cowboys lead was now up to 33-3.
For the final bout of the dual, Robert Winters Jr. was opposite Auston Harris at 285-pounds. Winters Jr. held a 2-1 lead on Harris after the first period, shooting and getting the takedown. Harris got the escape in the first period and tied the match up in the second with another escape. In the third period, Harris came up with the takedown on Winters Jr. to pull ahead and he would hold on for the 4-3 decision win.
Oklahoma St. secured the dual win, 36-3 over Northern Colorado. UNC's record fell to 1-3 and OSU's improved to 5-1.
"We need to go home, heal up and get ready for our next preparation towards March," Nickerson said. "I am confident that this team will be there when we put it all together."
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado will return to Bank of Colorado Arena to host Northern Iowa on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.(MST).

Harris got the escape in the first period and tied the match up in the second with another escape. In the third period, Harris came up with the takedown on Winters Jr. to pull ahead and he would hold on for the 4-3 decision win.
Oklahoma St. secured the dual win, 36-3 over Northern Colorado. UNC's record fell to 1-3 and OSU's improved to 5-1.
