Bears Drop Road Dual Against Beavers

Northern Colorado rallied to tie the match, but could not keep the momentum going in the final matches
CORVALLIS, Ore.- It was a Friday night fight for Northern Colorado wrestling, as the they dropped the dual against Oregon State, 21-12. The Beavers won seven matches, all by decision, against the Bears.
"Tonight we got beat by a fired up Oregon State team," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "Credit to them, they wrestled hard and we were simply not at our best. We will need to have a short memory, as we head down to Stillwater to face a tough Oklahoma State team on Sunday."
The dual started at 125-pounds, with Jace Koelzer taking on Brandon Kaylor. Koezler would trail 4-1 after the first period and 6-2 after two. Kaylor closed out the match with riding time and won an 8-4 decision over Koelzer to give Oregon St. the early lead.
No. 17 Mosha Schwartz went against No. 19 Devan Turner in the 133-pound bout. Turner racked up three takedowns and defeated Schwartz in a 7-3 decision to extend the Beavers advantage.
In the 141-pound match, Chris Sandoval faced Grant Willits. Sandoval had an early takedown on Willits, but the lead was short-lived. Willits responded with an escape and his own takedown to lead after the first period. Willits went on to win the bout 7-5 by decision and UNC found itself down 9-0 after the first three matches.
No. 11 Andrew Alirez took the mat at 149-pounds against Lane Stigall. Alirez struck fast with three takedowns on Stigall and was up 6-2 after one period. In the third period, Stigall was hit with a penalty to give Alirez another point for the 7-5 decision win. The Bears were on the board, down 9-3.
Now in the 157-pound match, Nathan Moore faced Logan Meek. Moore scored early as well, getting a takedown on Meek in the first period. Moore would add a takedown in the second period to extend his lead. An escape in the final quarter gave Moore the 6-2 advantage and he would secure the decision win. UNC pulled closer to the Beavers, now trailing 9-6.
No. 25 Austin Matthews battled Aaron Olmos in the 165-pound match. After the first period, Matthews trailed 4-1 and Olmos would add another takedown in the second period to extend his lead. Matthews scored a takedown in the third period, but Olmos had built a solid cushion. Olmos defeated Matthews in a 9-3 decision and increased the team lead to 12-6.
The 174-pound match was a quick contest, as Billy Higgins got the fall on Jackson McKinney at 24 seconds. Higgins was able to turn McKinney after an early takedown and earn fall. The win tied the dual up at 12 for UNC after the early deficit.
At 184-pounds, No. 28 Alan Clothier went against No. 33 Colt Doyle. The two were scoreless after the first period. Doyle would get two takedowns in the next period on Clothier to take the lead. The takedowns would prove to be the difference and Doyle defeated Clothier, 4-2 by decision. Oregon St. was back in front 15-12 over UNC.
Sethan Bogulski go the call at 197-lb against JJ Dixon, who took the lead with a takedown in the first period. Dixon would add another takedown in the third period and won the 6-1 decision over Bogulski. The Beavers now extended their lead to 18-12 over the Bears.
In the final match of the night, Robert Winters Jr. faced Jamarcus Grant. The two were scoreless after the first period and Winters Jr. would choose down for the second. Winters Jr. promptly escaped from Grant to take the 1-0 lead. Grant chose down for the third period and tied the match with an escape. With the score tied, the match went to overtime and the two battled through two overtime periods scoreless. In the third overtime period, Grant earned an escape and followed up with a takedown on Winters Jr. for the 4-1 sudden victory.
Oregon St. won the dual 21-12 after starting fast and finishing strong against the Bears. UNC's dual record fell to 1-2 on the season. Higgins' win provided the only bonus points in the dual for either team.
What's ahead
Northern Colorado will travel to Stillwater to take on No. 8 Oklahoma State on Sunday, Jan. 12, with the first match starting at 2 p.m.(MT).
