Bears Claw Through the Governors
9/8/2019 4:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Greeley- Coming off two road games the Bears were happy to finally be home, in their own temple, to play the kind of soccer they like. With being on our own grass the Bears took full advantage by dominating Austin Peay, the Governors, 3-0.
To start the game, both teams were taking shots and sharing the ball 50-50. Haley O'Nan and Lexi Pulley both had early shots in the game, both pushing to heighten the intensity. Kenzie Engelkins, Cara Quinn, and Pulley all had hard shots on-goal, but it was Cara Quinn who buried one into the back of the net assisted by Erika Hall in the 20th minute.
Austin Peay tried to reconfigure themselves but our strong back line, including Lindi Jennings, held them to a halt. Less than 5 minutes later Britney Donais scored her first goal of the game off a penalty kick from Jennings. The Governors then grew antsy as they were given their first yellow card of the game in the 25th minute.
Kalen Niedling had one shot on goal that looked promising but was saved by the Governors.
As both teams went back and forth, the Governors were putting on the pressure as they spent most of the tail-end of this first half in their attacking zone. But, Taylor Washington stood her ground and let nothing past her.
As we went into halftime Austin Peay completely reconfigured their starting line up in hopes of getting something started for them, while the Bears stayed with their same lineup as what they had in the first half to keep the momentum going.Kaitlyn Meeder, Pulley, and Quinn all had shots on goal within the first 8 minutes of the second half. Through many fouls, substitutions, goal kicks and corner kicks from both teams we started to finally see an even game.
That was until the 71st minute when Donais received her second goal of the game assisted by Taylor Bray and Hailey Collier. Donais hit a 100 percent accuracy today with 2 shots on goal both resulting in goals for the Bears.
The Governors were completely caught off-guard and quickly made three substitutions to get fresh legs out there. However, the Bears kept fighting keeping the Governors away from their defensive end, but with the Governors desperate for some goals, two yellow cards were given to players from Austin Peay as they were trying to run against the clock.
The governors had many substitutions again throughout the second half in hopes of starting a new rhythm in order for a goal to be scored, but the Bears just weren't letting that happen. The clock kept ticking down and the Bears kept pushing from all angles to keep the ball out of their box, and that's exactly what they did as the clock ran down to 0:00.
A huge win all the way around for the Bears today as they have been on a rough road-schedule the past couple of weeks. Washington had 2 saves overall in thanks to her strong line of 10 in front of her, and Pulley as well as Quinn lead the team for most shots at 3 each.
The Bears will take on the University of Iowa this up-coming Friday on the road. To stay up to date on all things UNC soccer, visit UNCBears.com and follow the team on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at @UNC_BearsSoccer.
