Olympic bronze medalist Leevan Sands joins the UNC Track and Field staff as an assistant coach
GREELEY – The greatest triple jumper ever to come out of the Bahamas is now an assistant coach for the Northern Colorado Track and Field program. Olympic Bronze medalist and four-time Olympian Leevan "Superman" Sands has been hired onto the staff by Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Wayne Angel.
"We had a very talented pool of applicants, but Leevan stood head and shoulders above them all," Angel said. "His passion, drive and vision are the qualities that really stood out to me during the hiring process. Our jumpers and multi-eventers are blessed to have the opportunity to be coached and mentored by Leevan. With the hiring of Leevan to complete our staff, it is time to get busy and work on winning some championships."
Sands holds the Bahamian national record in triple jump and won a pair of NCAA Championships in the event as well. He competed in the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics winning bronze while competing in 2008 in Beijing. Along with the Olympic bronze, he won multiple Central America and Caribean Championship golds and silvers.
At Auburn, he was a four-time All-American and named the Men's SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2004.
It is a sincere honor and a great privilege to join this champion group of administrators, coaches, and athletes at the University of Northern Colorado. I want to give a special thanks to Senior Associate Athletic Director, Ms. Rachel Walton and Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, Coach Wayne Angel for granting me this great opportunity, Sands said.
"I look forward to bringing my expertise and experience as the SEC Scholar Athlete, four-time Olympian, Olympic medalist, and developmental track and field coach to my new UNC family, and I am confident that we will take this team to the top! Hard work, persistence, and determination is the recipe for great success. Athletes, come ready to work hard and learn a lot. Always remember that confidence, courage, and consistency wins conference championships! Thank you to the UNC family for welcoming me with open arms. Let's have a great track and field year team! Go Bears!"
The nickname Superman was given to sands after he came back from a ruptured patellar tendon at the 2012 Olympics. His two-year recovery helped him qualify for the Olympics in 2016 and earn the honor of being the Bahamas' flag bearer.
Sands joins Angel and recently hired Stormie Sickler to complete the first year coaches staff.
