You could not have asked for nicer weather on the campus of Northern Colorado for the UNC Bears women's tennis team's last match of the season, and Senior day for Anna Battersby. The Colorado State Rams made the short trip to Greeley and came away with the win over UNC 5-2.
CSU was able to take the doubles point by winning the No. 3 match over Sarina Chhabra/Synclair Larson 6-2, and Sandra Keta/Natalie Stanton 6-3 on the No. 2 court. Anna Battersby/Raffa Mora were leading their match 5-3 on court 1 and on the brink of victory before it went unfinished due to CSU clinching the doubles point.
In singles, the Rams were able to capture wins from the No. 6 spot over Synclair Larson 6-2, 6-0, No. 4 singles over Madeline Doherty 6-2, 6-1, and on the No. 2 court over Sandra Keta 6-3, 6-0.
The Bears earned two big wins in highly competitive matches on the No. 3 and No. 5 courts. Raffa Mora earned the first win with a three-set thriller, winning the duel 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. The second came from Sarina Chhabra, who took a close first set 7-6, and finished it off with a tiebreaker in the second set with another win 6-4 (5-0).
The lone senior playing her final match for the UNC Bears did not have things fall her way today, but Anna Battersby handled her 6-4, 6-2 loss today with class and gratitude.
Battersby had this to say after her final match,
"I really enjoyed my last match. The team really came all together and celebrated the end of a good season. For me, I just went out and enjoyed it and I have really enjoyed my time here. This was just a really fun experience, I love my team."
Head Coach Chad Stoloff was proud of the season his team put together,
"It was a great day, great match today. What a great doubles performance by our No. 1's., they were at triple match point up 5-3 when they were stopped unfortunately, but it was a great doubles match. Sarina played a really smart, solid match to get the win at No. 5 which was outstanding. Raffa kept trying different things and figured out a solution that worked and came back and got the win. I'm really proud of our team and how far we've come as a program, numbers don't tell the story. Really proud of our women and how they've grown, bonded, developed relationships. We are proud of the work we did this year and how we did it. Our program will continue to grow and improve."
The Bears finish their 2018-19 season with a record of 7-15 (1-9 BSC) and were able to secure 6 of those wins on their home court.
