Smith earns sixth Ready Nutrition Big Sky Player of the Week award

Savannah Smith earned her third straight Big Sky Player of the Week award and sixth overall,
OGDEN, Utah – For the third consecutive week and sixth time this season Savannah Smith has earned the Ready Nutrition Big Sky Player of the Week. Smith earned the honor by leading UNC in scoring with 34.5 points and assists with 5.5 as the team picked up two big conference wins at Idaho State and Weber State.
Smith has been giving Big Sky coaches nightmares as of late scoring 30 points in both games this past week and four straight overall.
This past week she scored 14 of her 33 points at Idaho State in the third quarter to help start a 13-point comeback against the Bengals. She followed it up with a 36 point performance at Weber State. Against ISU she recorded five assists and added in six more at WSU.
Smith became the program's all-time leading scorer in the game at Weber State, passing former teammate D'shara Strange. She now sits at 1,898 points and will become the first player in program history to score 1,900 points with her first basket on Thursday night.
By picking up her sixth Big Sky Player of the Week award of the season, Smith now ties Montana's Mandy Morales for most Player of the Week awards in a season.
For the season, Smith is averaging 22.8 points, 4.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals a game. She has turned it up in Big Sky play with 25.8 points, 4.7 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals. Smith ranks in the top 10 in the NCAA is her points per game at seventh and fourth in free throw percentage at 92.7 percent.
Smith and the rest of the Bears are back inside Bank of Colorado Arena one last time this year on Thursday when Southern Utah visits. It is Senior Night for Smith and teammate Shalise Fernander who will be honored before the game. Following the game, UNC will head to Flagstaff, Arizona for the regular season finale at Northern Arizona on Saturday at 2 pm.
