It came down to just a few missed shots today for the Bears, death by inches. The Bears came out with an abundance of energy that filled the courts of Work Out West Saturday morning, but the Southern Utah Thunderbirds were able to steal the match from the Bears at the very end by a score of 4-3.
The doubles pairings for the Bears started the day hot, earning the point with decisive victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Raffa Mora/Anna Battersby handled their business on court No. 1 taking the 6-2 victory over Charity Sagiao/Zoe Tanti.
After Daniela Cozzi/Ghita Nassik won on the No. 2 court over Synclair Larson/MadelineDoherty 6-2, Sandra Keta/Natalie Stanton quickly followed it up with a 6-3 win to secure the doubles point for UNC.
The Bears fed off the energy of the home crowd all day to play some highly competitive tennis, but the T-Birds held in all day to keep it close. Charity Sagiao earned the first point on the day for SUU by defeating Madeline Doherty 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 4 court. Ghita Nassik won an entertaining and hard fought match against Anna Battersby in a match that saw several long and intense rallies on the No. 1 court by a score of 6-3, 7-5.
Continuing the trend of incredibly close matches, the Bears bounced back in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. After a solid 6-4 win in the first set, Sandra Keta had to win the tiebreaker 7-6 (6) in the second set to win the first singles match for UNC.
Raffa Mora had arguably the toughest match on the day when Zoe Tanti bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to make things very tough for Mora. Tanti took the second set 6-3, forcing a third set that would be a marathon. Mora won the third set 7-5 in an intense and emotional match.
Raffa Mora had this to say after her match,
"We came out really strong in doubles, used that momentum to take us into singles and got me going in the first, the girl came out strong in the second and kept me under a lot of pressure. I had to deal with a few things but just played some great tennis today, getting the job done. The third set I was down the whole time, I was just using pure grit and fight to get through it really. The crowd helped us out amazingly today."
With the Bears needing just one win from either the No. 5 or 6 spot to clinch the win, the T-Birds fought hard and pulled off wins in both pairings. Daniela Cozzi defeated Sarina Chhabra 6-0, 6-2 in No. 5 and Jessica Stefan defeated Synclair Larson 6-4, 6-3 in No. 6.
Another shot at defending their home court will come on Tuesday for the Bears when they take on Portland State at 10 AM.
