Sunday morning's match for the Bears came down to the wire with the University of Montana, with the Griz coming out on top by a slim margin, 4-3.
The Bears came into the match Sunday having spent the spring break bonding as a team, and it showed in the doubles matches. Sandra Keta/Natalie Stanton earned the first doubles win 6-3 in the No. 3 spot, followed up closely by a Raffa Mora/Anna Battersby win 6-4 in No. 1 to clinch the point for the Bears. Madeline Doherty/Synclair Larson were defeated by their opponents 6-0 in the No. 2 spot.
The singles matches were all tight duels, resulting in two wins for the Bears. In the No. 3 duel, Sandra Keta took the first set in a 10-point tiebreaker 7-6 (3). After Bianca Bostrom won the second set 6-4, Keta finished the match of with a 6-4 win of her own.
Synclair Larson also had a back-and-forth first set in which she overcame Lidia Dukic 7-6 (9). Dukic fought back in the second set, winning 6-4. However, Larson was not going to let this one slip away, winning 10-5 in the third set to take the win.
Anna Battersby lost a tight three-set match in the No. 1 spot when Julia Ronney fought back after losing the first set to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Griz also took the No. 2 matchup, with Lauren Dunlap defeating Raffa Mora 6-2, 6-4. Montana beat the Bears in No. 4 over Madeline Doherty 7-5, 6-2, and in No. 6 over Natalie Stanton 7-5, 6-2.
Head Coach Chad Stoloff had this to say after the match,
"Came down the wire, great match, this is what college tennis is all about. . .both teams fought tooth and nail, gritty performances today by our team up and down the line. . .credit to Montana, they just pulled ahead of the finish line just before us. . .just one heck of a match, great Big Sky Match."
Next weekend will be the next chance for the Bears to get a win in front of their home crowd when they take on Southern Utah on March 23 at 10:30 AM.
