After taking the opener of the series against North Dakota State, UNC found itself in position to win the series late in Game 1 of the doubleheader on Friday. Billy Moreland sparked a Bears sixth inning rally that ended with UNC scoring a pair of runs without having the ball leave the infield. Sam Leach came on to close out his first save of the season in a 3-1 Northern Colorado win.
GAME 1
Following the Moreland single, Tyler Yamaguchi and Matt Burkart reached to load the bases with one out. Jack Pauley busted it down the first base line to beat out a potential inning-ending double play, which allowed Moreland to score what turned out to be the game-winning run. Spotty Bison defense and great hustle from Jake Gitter allowed the Bears to add an insurance run and take a two-run lead to the final inning.
Lech, who delivered the walkoff single in the series opener came on in the seventh to retire NDSU and earn the first save of the 2019 campaign and give UNC the series win.
The biggest reason UNC had a chance to win it in the late innings was because of the performance from starting pitcher Issac Bracken. The junior went six innings allowed just three hits, struck out 10 and didn't allow an earned run.
GAME 2
The pitcher's duel that was Game 1, was met with offensive fireworks in the series finale. Five combined runs in the first inning, but unfortunately for the Bears their bats were unable to keep pace in this slugfest. NDSU salvaged the series with a win in the final game, 11-5.
The Bison scored a pair of runs in the top of the first and UNC had the answer. Matt Zoba led off with a bomb that cut through the 10 miles per hour wind and over the left centerfield fence that cut the Bison lead in half. Yamaguchi singled and stole second base, which allowed him to score on the Matt Burkart single and with nobody out, UNC had tied the game. Pauley drove in Burkart and UNC chased the Bison starter before he could record two outs.
What the starter didn't have the NDSU relievers did, they held UNC to just two more runs over the final six innings, but one of those came on Zoba's second long ball of the series and third of the season.
BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX SCORE
On the day:
Zoba finished with a pair of home runs and two RBI.
Burkart closed the series with three hits, a triple and an RBI.
Pauley had three steaks.
Gitter had a pair of knocks and an RBI.
SCHEDULE SAYS
The Creighton series was canceled earlier this week, which means UNC is off until they head to Portland on Friday to take on the Pilots.Â
