Northern Colorado set four more school records on Thursday at the WAC Championships
HOUSTON – Northern Colorado swimming and diving moved up the standings during day two of the WAC Championships with a pair of first place finishes. The Bears moved from fourth place to second with 209.5 points halfway through the four-day event.
Four school records were set and a pair of first place finishes were earned. The 200 free relay team won its race, along with Maddy Moore finishing tied for first in the 50 free.
Moore, who was on the record-setting 200 free relay team, swam the 50 free in 22.71 to finish in a dead tie for first with Northern Arizona's Elis Rodriguez. She broke her own school record that she set previously this year with the time and earned a NIC A-qualifying time.
She was joined by teammates Morgan King, Nicole Depooter and Emily Hamel on the 200 free relay team that took first by touching the wall in 1:31.32. This time was also a school record. Hamel also swam in the 50 free A-finals with Moore, coming in third by clocking in at 22.95.
Two other UNC swimmers finished second in the other two swimming events for the night. Rose Saya earned second place in the 500 free, and Petra Kis in the 200 IM. Saya broke her own school record in the 500 free with a time of 4:51.49. Like her teammate, Kis, swam the 200 IM in 2:00.87 to break her own record.
Sunneva Robertson also swam in the 500 free, setting a career-best with a time of 4:56.06 in the A-final to finish sixth.
In diving, the team competed in the 1-meter on Thursday. Celeste Llona used a score of 230.95 to earn a spot in the B-finals. She improved her score during the finals to a 236.55 to earn a 10th place finish.
Ebeling's Take
I'm really proud of the way our girls have stepped up for the second night in a row. I've never been a part of a team that has broken a school record in every single event that they've swum. There are some technical things we need to clean up going into the second half of the meet, but I am really proud of the heart and pride that we are swimming with. We have to keep the momentum rolling!
What's ahead
Northern Colorado aims to continue its strong performance during day three of the championship. The team will compete in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay along with platform diving. Prelims begin at 9:30 am MT and can be watched through the WAC's Facebook Live feed. The finals start at 5 pm MT and will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network.
