UNC swimming & diving is out to a strong start at the WAC Championships.
HOUSTON – Northern Colorado swimming and diving got out to a great start during day one of the WAC Championships on Wednesday. The Bears sit in fourth place with 72 points.
(2/27/2019) WAC Championship Day 1
The night started off with 200 medley relay team of Maddy Moore, Maria Heymans, Morgan King and Emily Hamel setting a school record by taking first place in a time of 1:40.66. The time beat the previous record by over two seconds, set back in 2013. The group had already qualified for the College Swimming National Invitational Championship (NICA) earlier this year but helped their seeding going into it with the first place finish.
UNC went on to qualify another relay team for the NICA in the 800 freestyle. The quartet of Petra Kis, Sunneva Robertson, Hallie Peterson and Rose Saya finished the race in 7:24.74. The time is also a school record as they finished in fourth place for the race.
In the diving pool, the 3 meter championship was competed for on Wednesday. Freshman Celeste Llona qualified for the B-finals with a prelim score of 236.85. She ended up finishing in 15th place with a finals score of 227.15.
Ebeling's Take
We couldn't have asked for a better start to the meet. We knew if everyone stepped up we could score some big points tonight, but walking away with a WAC Championship and two school records after the first night is very exciting. We are looking forward to some more fast racing tomorrow!
What's ahead
Northern Colorado will look to build upon its day one momentum heading into day two. The team will compete in the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free along with the 1 meter in diving. Prelims begin at 9:30 am MT and can be watched through the WAC's Facebook Live feed. The finals start at 5 pm MT and will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network. Live results through all four days can be found by clicking here.
