Winning on home court will be key for Northern Colorado women's basketball chase of a Big Sky title
Northern Colorado women's basketball returns home to start a key three-game homestand on Thursday night when Eastern Washington comes to town. The Bears look to hold serve on home court as they battle with Idaho, Portland State and Idaho State for the Big Sky regular season title. UNC and EWU will tip off at 7 pm inside Bank of Colorado Arena.
Opening Tip
• Northern Colorado picked up its 10th Big Sky win of the season with a 71-61 win at Sacramento State on Monday.
• Savannah Smith knotched her fifth 30 point game of the season at Sacramento State scoring an even 30.
• Micayla Isenbart put together her second straight 14 point game on Monday night, scoring all of the team's bench points.
• UNC is at the halfway point of a four games in eight day stretch, they are currently 1-1 during it.
• Eastern Washington is coming off a big home win last Saturday against Montana 67-64.
• The Eagles snapped a three game losing streak to start the month of February and are 2-1 in it.
• EWU is in the middle of the Big Sky pack at 5-7, tied for sixth with Montana, but they hold the tiebreaker over the Griz going 2-0 against them.
Last Time Out
UNC outscored Sacramento State 21-9 in the second quarter to separate from the Hornets in a 71-61 win. Savannah Smith scored 30 points, while Ali Meyer grabbed 16 rebounds for the Bears.
Scouting the Eagles
Eastern Washington is always a tough out in the Big Sky as head coach Wendy Schuller does a good job of coaching her team. After a sluggish non-conference season, EWU is 5-7 in the Big Sky, tied with Montana for sixth and one and a half games behind Montana State for the last bye in the Big Sky Tournament.
The Eagles are led by Violet Kapri Morrow who averages 19.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. She is the team's best shooting going 44.6 percent from the field. Only Grace Kirscher is the other Eagles scoring in double figures with 10.2 points a game.
Opponents have been able to shoot well against EWU going 44.0 percent from the field, leading to 69.4 points a game.
History against Eastern Washington
While playing in Cheney, it has been a close series between the Bears and Eagles tied at six wins each. Northern Colorado holds a big upper hand in Greeley though, at 8-3. It has been a series of streaks overall, with UNC currently on a three-game win streak and leading the series 15-9 overall.
Against the Big Sky
UNC joined the Big Sky in the 2006-07 season and has gone 126-95. Overall, the team is 139-101 against Big Sky schools.
Around the Big Sky
It looks to be a four team race for the Big Sky title this year between Northern Colorado, Idaho, Idaho State and Portland State. The Vandals lead the conference by half a game going into Thursday at 10-2 over UNC and ISU at 10-3. Portland State is a full game behind UI, but have two games in hand at 9-3.
On This Date
For the first time in program history, Northern Colorado will be playing at home on Valentine's Day. The Bears are 4-1 overall on the date, with all the games coming on the road. The last time UNC played on the date was in 2015, in a thrilling 52-51 win at Montana that snapped the Lady Griz 23-game home conference win streak.

It's setting up to be a battle for the top of the Big Sky on Saturday afternoon as Northern Colorado hosts Idaho. The Bears and Vandals are set to duke it out for the top spot in the conference at 2 pm.
