2020 Starts for the Bears at the Southern Scuffle

Northern Colorado will travel to Chattanooga for the two-day tournament
Northern Colorado wrestling is ready to make some noise to start 2020, as the team heads to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear.
The Southern Scuffle begins on New Year's Day and runs through Jan. 2. Five UNC wrestlers are pre-seeded in the lead up to the tournament. Mosha Schwartz will be the No.3 seed in the 133-pound bracket, the highest seeded Bear. Andrew Alirez(149), Jacob Seely(197) and Dalton Robertson(285) all are positioned at No. 5 in their weight classes. Alan Clothier is the No. 7 seed for the 184-pound bracket.
The Bears have been off the mat since competing at the Reno Tournament of Champions two weeks ago. Sethan Bogulski(174) and Brody Lamb(141) both placed sixth, going 5-2 and 6-2 respectively.
Earlier in December, UNC finished 15th in the team standings at the Cliff Keen Invitational. The 15th place finish is tied for second best in program history, while the team had a program-record 40 points at Cliff Keen.
Schwartz placed fifth at the tournament, with six wins overall and defeated three ranked wrestlers. Seely placed seventh, recording six wins and defeated two ranked wrestlers in route to placing. Seely became a two-time placer at the Cliff Keen Invite.
National Rankings
Northern Colorado is ranked No. 32 in the NCAA by Trackwrestling.com, sharing the spot with Campbell University. Â
After placing at Cliff Keen, Schwartz and Seely find themselves appearing in multiple national rankings. Schwartz earns his top ranking from Trackwrestling.com at No. 11, while being No. 12 by The Open Mat, No. 13 by Intermat.com and No. 14 by FloWrestling.com. Seely is slated at No. 15 by both Intermat and Trackwrestling, while being No. 16 for Open Mat and No. 21 by FloWrestling.
Alirez earns the No. 13 ranking from Trackwrestling, No. 17 by Open Mat and No. 18 by Intermat. The Greeley, Colo. native is 10-0 this season.
Robertson has an 11-4 record after moving up two weight classes in the offseason and is ranked No. 21 by FloWrestling.
Jace Koelzer comes in at No. 21 by FloWrestling, with the redshirt-freshman holding a 9-4 overall record.
Austin Matthews is ranked No. 21 by Trackwrestling, holding a 5-3 record in his first season at UNC.
Clothier is listed at No. 23 by Trackwrestling, with a 11-2 overall record in the first half of the season.
Scouting the Field
At the Southern Scuffle, UNC will face off against wrestlers from four, top-10 teams and four others ranked in the NWCA Coaches Poll. The teams include No. 5 Virginia Tech, No. 6 NC State and No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Pittsburgh, No. 11 Iowa State, No. 17 North Carolina, T-No. 25 Stanford and T-No. 25 Rider. Along with the ranked opponents, the Bears will see Big-12 opponents from Air Force, North Dakota State and West Virginia.
At the 2019 Scuffle, UNC had its best team finish, placing 11th with 45.5 points. Rico Montoya became first tournament finalist in program history, while Jacob Seely placed fifth to give the Bears two placers.
