Lyndsey Oates earns her fourth Coach of the Year award
FARMINGTON, UT- Northern Colorado volleyball head coach Lyndsey Oates was named the Big Sky Coach of the Year on Tuesday by the conference. Oates guided UNC to the outright Big Sky, regular season championship this season. The Bears are 23-7 overall in 2019 and their 17 conference wins ties a Big Sky single-season record.
Oates earns her fourth Big Sky Coach of the Year award, previously winning the award in 2009, 2011 and 2014.
UNC improved their win total in the conference by seven matches from 2018 and an eight-match improvement overall for the season.
Oates has led the 2019 Bears to sweep 11 opponents, including nine in the Big Sky.Â
Under the guidance of Oates, the Bears placed three athletes on the Big Sky All-Conference, first-team and one on the second. Daisy Schultz, Kailey Jo Ince and Taylor Muff were selected to the first-team, while Lauren Hinrichs was named to the second-team.
This season, UNC ranks first in the conference in multiple categories. The Bears offense has been prolific, leading the Big Sky with 13.70 kills per set, 12.80 assists per set and 1.63 aces per set. Opponents are averaging 13.50 digs per set against the UNC offense, lowest in the conference. Efficiency has also been key for the Bears success this season, ranking third with a .229 hitting percentage.
Defensively, the Bears have limited opponents on offense to 10.85 kills per set to lead the conference.
Oates and her staff have emphasized serving this season and the team responded dramatically. Kyndall Feather leads the way with a DI record 42 aces. Taylor Els became the program's all-time, DI leader in aces with her 103 earlier this season and has 106 to date.
The records will continue to fall in 2019 as Ince approaches the DI single-season kill record and Schultz approaches the single-season assist record. Ince had the second most kills in a single DI match with 29 against Idaho State(11/9), while Schultz posted a DI record, 72 assists in the same match.
Coach Oates and Northern Colorado look to carry the regular season momentum into postseason as they travel to Sacramento, Calif. for the Big Sky Tournament this week. UNC is the top seed in the tournament and will play the eighth seed, Montana, on Thursday, Nov. 28th at 5:30 p.m.(MT).
