11/26/2019 3:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Four Bears finished in double figures scoring on Tuesday
CANCUN, Mexico – While the inches of snow was piling up back home in Colorado, UNC men's basketball was piling up the points in Cancun on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears defeated Boston 78-55 in the Cancun Challenge, advancing to the championship game of the Maya Division against Gardner Webb tomorrow.
It was a balanced scoring effort from the Bears as four players finished in double figures led by Jonah Radebaugh's 25 points. Bodie Hume (15), Sam Masten (10) and Kai Edwards (10) joined Radebaugh in double figures.
Edwards recorded his second double-double of the season adding in 12 rebounds to his 10 points.
As a team, UNC shot 53.6 percent to 38.6 by Boston.
While the Terriers lead early, UNC went on a quick 6-0 run in the middle of the first half to take a 10 point lead. The Bears kept it around that margin until they closed the half with a 7-0 run to enter the half up 41-35.
Radebaugh scored 13 of his 25 points in the first and included going 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Northern Colorado shot 51.5 percent as a team in the first half. Edwards had eight of his 12 rebounds at the break as well.
UNC started the second half on a 9-0 run to double up the Terriers 50-25 and put the game away.
The team increased its shooting in the second half to 56.5 percent.
What They Said
Head Coach Jeff Linder
Overall thoughts
"Our guys did a good job of executing the game plan today. Coach DeWeese did a good job with the scout having us ready. We knew we could not let them shoot threes. In the first half, they only shot three and in the second they got some more up, but the majority of those came in the final few minutes. And the other thing we talked about is they are a team that plays really hard. They beat South Carolina last week with the hustle plays and I told our team we can't let them do that to us. Bodie (Hume) helped set that tone in the first half diving on the floor and getting that timeout for us."
On Kai Edwards performance
"Kai Edwards was relentless on the court tonight. He gave us those extra possessions that helped up put them away. He has been doing a good job with his screens and setting the floor to help make finishes easier for him. Really, he is playing like you would expect out of a senior right now."
About the team's balanced scoring
"Balanced scoring needs to be our strength. A guy like Tre'Shon Smoots and Sam Masten had flipped minutes today vs the West Virginia game. Sam struggled at times against WVU, but he came back strong tonight. Sometimes it will be one guy over the other just based on matchups."
Looking ahead to Gardner Webb
"Gardner Webb is a really good team. Their record isn't indicative of how good they are. They are an NCAA Tournament team that has played a tough schedule so far."
Stat of the Game
Northern Colorado went on a 16-0 run that stretched the final 3:20 of the first half and first 3:28 of the second that allowed the team to pull away from Boston and go on to an easy win. UNC went from up nine to up 25 in that span.
Game Notes
- Radabaugh's 25 points are a season-high for him and three off his career-high. He shot a strong 8-of-11 from the field, including going 5-for-5 from behind the arc.
- The Bears out-rebounded the Terriers 40-23.
- Tuesday's game was the first time Northern Colorado played a regular season game outside of the United States.
