Men's Basketball Storm Back, Fall Just Short to Gardner Webb
11/27/2019 6:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
UNC basketball never quit against Gardner Webb Wednesday
CANCUN, Mexico – The word quit is not in the Northern Colorado men's basketball vocabulary. They have proven that over the first seven games of the year. After mounting comebacks against Northern Iowa and West Virginia earlier this season, UNC battled almost all the way back from 23 points down on Wednesday against Gardner Webb.
The Bears pulled within one twice against GWU after trailing by 23 with 15:35 left but ended up falling 67-62.
After shooting just 25.0 percent in the first half and making only three 3-pointers, UNC's offense woke up in the second half. They shot 40.6 percent from the field and used the three to get back into the game making 10 of them.
Bodie Hume and Trent Harris led the second half charge with 28 combined points during the final 20 minutes. The duo hit three 3-pointers to cut the Gardner Webb lead to 14 after going down by 23 to spark the UNC run.
Hume scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, while Harris scored all 15 of his in the second all coming on made 3-point shots.
The threes kept raining for Northern Colorado including a pair from Harris and one from Sam Masten during an 11-2 run that made it a three-point ball game.
It was not just the Bears sharpshooting, but also their defense that allowed them to make a run late holding Gardner Webb to only three made field goals over the final 8:06 of the ball game.
The Running Bulldogs made timely shots and their free throws late while getting enough stops to hold off Northern Colorado.

Overall Thoughts
"Gardner Webb came out and punked us for a lack of a better word in the first half and got us on our heels. At the same time we had a lot of open looks in the first half where you do not dig yourself that hole if you make them. We missed five layups, five free throws and some open threes. I told the guys at the half we are getting open looks we just have to make them. Then in the second half you go down by 23, but it shows the character of our guys to scratch and claw our way into a chance to win the game. Gardner Webb is a team that returns a lot of guys after going to the NCAA Tournament last year and will be right there again this year to win their league. We will take a lot away from this game and trip. We continue to get better and have some good things to take away from this."
About Trent Harris second half performance
"I told Trent that knowing the way Gardner Webb plays defense he's going to have good looks today. Then once he started making some I had to find the way to keep getting him looks and making shots. The guys did a good job of finding him whether it was in transition or sets today and I wish I had done a better job of getting him another look late in the game for us today."
Stat of the Game
Garnder Webb outshot UNC 48.3 percent to 32.8 in the game. GWU shot at least 48.0 percent in each half while the Bears struggled in the first half shooting 25.0 percent before improving to 40.6 percent in the second.
