Damen Pape, Jaziah Whaley and Cody Eaton join the rising program
Head Coach Troy Nickerson has announced the signing of three wrestlers for the 2020 signing class. "This fall we added three key pieces to the puzzle. We have a young team and don't lose many guys from our team this season. We didn't have many needs and really focused on finding the right kids that fit our program and the weight classes we wanted," Nickerson said.Â
Â
Damen Pape
Pape is the No. 88 overall prospect in the class of 2020 and is No. 14 nationally at 182lbs according to Flowrestling.com. Pape hails from Hastings, NE and attends Hastings High School, where he has compiled a 150-4 overall record. Pape captured his first state title in 2019, after finishing second and third in his first two state championships. He is a two-time USAW Pre-Season Nationals champion and a USAW Junior Greco-Roman All-American. Pape projects to compete at 184 lbs.
"We are thrilled to add a young man like Damen to our program," Nickerson said. "He is a diamond in the rough and has the skills that will stand out at the next level. Adding Damen to our program was just about fit and he is a great addition to our program."
Â
Jaziah Whaley
Whaley will stay close to home after competing for Valley High School. He captured his first state championship in 2019 and has compiled a 129-7 overall record. He also placed third at the State Championships in 2017 and 2018. Whaley is a two-time NHSCA All-American, placing 4th in 2017 and 2018. He projects at 157 or 165 lbs.Â
"Jaziah is one of the most underrated wrestlers in the state of Colorado," Nickerson said. "When you have the opportunity to keep kids local, it is a must and that is what we did with Jaziah. He will make an immediate impact on our program."
Â
Cody Eaton
Eaton is another local prospect staying close to home after wrestling for Windsor High School. Eaton is a state finalist and two-time state medalist and has compiled a 103-25 overall record. He is a USAW Preseason Nationals All-American, placing 2nd in 2017. He projects at 165 lbs.
"Cody has been around our program for quite some time now and when it came to his recruitment, it just made sense," Nickerson said. "Similar to Jaziah, keeping talent local is a priority and Cody is an excellent addition to our program."
Northern Colorado opens its home dual schedule on Saturday against West Virginia at 7 p.m. The dual will be streamed live on FloWrestling.com.
