Two Road Tests Await Conference-Leading Bears

Northern Colorado will take on Sacramento State and Portland State
Northern Colorado volleyball defended its home court and the top spot in the Big Sky Conference last weekend with two impressive wins over Eastern Washington and Idaho. Now the Bears will travel for two matches this week, starting with Sacramento State on Thursday night, followed by Portland State on Saturday afternoon.
UNC [12-6, 6-0] swept Eastern Washington this past Friday, with a strong defensive performance that limited the Eagles to a .000 attack percentage. The Bears faced Idaho, the number two team in the conference, on Saturday. UNC prevailed over the Vandals in a competitive match that saw the Bears rally late in sets two and three for the 3-1 victory.
Taylor Els once again helped control the opponent's attack on the back row, recording 40 digs in the two matches. UNC tops the conference, allowing 10.92 kills per set.
At the net, Lauren Hinrichs was key for the Bears' wins, scoring 21 kills and hitting .335 in seven total sets. Hinrichs also added a pair of block assists.
Kailey Jo Ince delivered big points again, accounting for 26 kills and a .235 attack percentage. The sophomore also helped defend the net with three block assists. Ince is third in the Big Sky with 3.66 kills per set.
In the conference, UNC leads in kills with 13.06 per set.
Against Idaho, Taylor Muff posted 16 kills and 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Muff showed up strong on the block as well, tallying four solo and one assist.
Daisy Schultz was integral to the offensive production, recording 90 assists and 24 digs. The junior earned her fourth and fifth double-doubles against the Eagles (28 assists, 12 digs) and Vandals (62 assists, 12 digs) respectively. Schultz's 62 against Idaho was one off of her career-best and she leads the conference with 10.73 assists per set.
The Bears lead the Big Sky with 1.66 aces per set, recording 118 total as a team. Kyndall Feather ranks first in the Big Sky with 0.44 aces per set and 31 total for the season. Larua Katarzynski is right behind Feather at third with 0.41 aces per set and 25 total in 2019.
With two road matches, UNC can further separate from the rest of the pack in conference with another strong weekend.
Scouting the Hornets
Sacramento State has a 4-2 record in the Big Sky, going 9-10 overall on the season and tied for second in the conference. The Hornets are on a three-match winning streak, all of them in five sets. They defeated Weber State and Idaho State on the road last weekend. Senior outside hitter Sarah Davis is first in the Big Sky with 4.22 kills per set and has a .186 attack percentage. Junior middle blocker, Cianna Andrews, protects the nets for the Hornets with 1.04 blocks per set.
Scouting the Vikings
Portland State comes in at 3-3 in the conference with a 7-10 overall record. The Vikings dropped their two matches last weekend, 0-3 against Weber State and 2-3 against Idaho State. Senior outside hitter Toni McDougald is the top scorer for Portland State, averaging 2.94 kills per set with a .194 attack percentage. Freshman libero Ellie Snook commands the defense and is second in the Big Sky with 5.43 digs per set.
Following the Bears
Northern Colorado will play Sacramento State on Thursday, October 17th at 8 pm MT. UNC will then take on Portland State on Saturday, October 19th at 1 pm.
