UNC used three goals to overpower Southern Utah
CEDAR CITY, UT- Northern Colorado continued its 2019 success in the Big Sky Conference, with a 3-1 win against Southern Utah on Friday afternoon. UNC [5-8-3, 3-0-2] struck first with a goal in the 13th minute by Cara Quinn and extended the lead on an Olivia Seddon-goal in the 25th minute. In the second half, the Bears padded their lead with a score from Kalen Niedling in the 70th minute.
"It's great to get a win on the road in conference," head coach Tim Barrera said. " [Sourthern Utah] has struggled, but we knew that they would be motivated to defend their home field."
UNC dominated most of the game, amassing 12 shots on goal to SUU's three. Overall, the Bears out-shot the Thunderbirds 22 to seven. Possession also favored UNC, as they controlled the ball for 59% of the game.
"We wanted to keep the ball on the far side of the field," Barrera said. "We knew they would give us part of the field and we played aggressive and had a lot of effort to control the ball."
The Bears were in control early, with Quinn scoring her third goal of the season on a header. Lexi Pulley fed the ball into the box to give Quinn the opportunity to score.
Seddon's scored her fourth goal of the season with a strong kick through traffic in the box, following a pass from Maddie Duren. The senior leads UNC in goals and total points for the season.
Pulley recorded her second assist of the day after streaking down the left side on a counter attack and crossing the ball perfectly to Niedling's feet. The goal was the sophomore's second of 2019.
Pulley's two assists today gives her a team-leading three on the season, with five total points to her credit.
"It was important to put balls into the box. Cara played a great ball off her head. Olivia is one of the best in the business in traffic. Lexi had a good game and set up Kalen well," Barrera added.Â
With the win today, UNC now has a five-game unbeaten streak that put them in a strong position for the top spot in the conference.
