@UNCBearsWrestle Closes Out Road Dual Schedule Against No. 25 NDSU

The 25th ranked Bison topped Northern Colorado 30-7 on Sunday afternoon
FARGO, ND- The Midwest road trip for Northern Colorado ended on Sunday, as the Bears dropped their dual against No. 25 North Dakota State, 30-7. UNC won two matches, while the Bison scored bonus points in four of its eight wins to get the victory.
"Mistakes cost us today," head Coach Troy Nickerson said. "Luckily, we have almost three weeks off to fix many of those as we finish our regular season at home. Rico Montoya and Chris Sandoval had good wins today. Everyone will need to raise the bar as we progress into February."
The dual started in the 285 lb weight class, as Robert Winters Jr. took the mat against No. 32 Brandon Metz. Winters Jr. battled Metz close, but came up short in a 6-3 decision and NDSU started out with a 3-0 lead.
No. 17 Montoya looked to get UNC on the scoreboard at 125 lb against Paul Bianchi. Montoya was in control early with takedowns in each of the first two periods to hold the advantage. Montoya piled on in the final period with three more takedowns and two penalty points, along with adding riding time for the 14-4 major decision win. The Bears raced in front of the Bison 4-3.
Sean Cannon battled No. 15 Cam Sykora in the 133 lb match. Cannon dropped the match 16-0 by tech fall at 5:00 and NDSU retook the lead, 8-4.
In the 141 lb match, Sandoval faced Sawyer Degen and Sandoval scored early with two takedonws to lead 4-2 after the first period. Sandoval tacked on another takedown in the second and won a 6-2 decision over Degen. UNC pulled within one of NDSU at 8-7.
Dante Rodriguez returned to the mat for the Bears in the 149 lb match, taking on No. 31 Jaden VanMaanen. Rodriguez lead 3-2 after the first period, but VanMaanen scored 10 points in the second to jump in front. Van Maanen would go on to win 15-4 by major decision and the Bison had a 12-7 lead.
Jordan Robison faced Luke Weber in the 157 lb match, with Weber getting the 8-2 decision win over Robison. NDSU extended its lead to 15-7.
Macoy Flanagan met No. 12 Andrew Fogarty in the 165 lb match. Fogarty ended the match in the second period with a 16-1 tech fall at 4:45 and the Bison were now up 20-7.
In the 174 lb match, Trenton Schultz went against Lorenzo De La Riva. Schultz dropped the bout 10-2 by major decision and NDSU padded its advantage at 24-7.
Dalton Robertson faced off against Michael Otomo in the 184 lb match and Robertson trailed 2-1 after the first period. The two battled it out for the next two periods, but Robertson could not score any points. Otomo held on for the 2-1 decision win and the Bison lead 27-7 with one match remaining.
No. 17 Jacob Seely faced Cordell Eaton in the final match and the two were scoreless after one period. Seely picked up an escape in the second period, but Eaton would respond with his own in the third period. With the score knotted at one, the two went to overtime. Eaton get a takedown over Seely in overtime to get the sudden victory, 3-1.
The No. 25 Bison defeated Northern Colorado 30-7 in the Bears final road dual of the season.
Up Next
Northern Colorado will have an extended break from competition and will not be back on the mat until Feb. 15. UNC will close out its dual schedule with three home, Big 12 matches, starting with Utah Valley on the 15th.
