Northern Colorado had some good and bad matches on Friday night
Northern Colorado wrestling battled tough against Utah Valley all night, but the Wolverines rallied in the upper weight classes to win the dual. 22-17. Utah Valley is ranked No. 11 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Mid-Major poll.
UNC had the 17-3 advantage at the midpoint of the dual, before dropping the next five matches.
"There was some good and bad," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "Our lightweights, with the exception of Rico, wrestled well. Its exciting to see guys like Chris Sandoval and Jordan Robison figure things out. They're getting better and that's always good to see. Dante, we have always know how good he is. He's exciting and electric; we expect him to go out there and [win]. Unfortunately, the second half we did not show up and it cost us."
Dante Rodriguez came out aggressive in the 149 lb bout against Landon Knutzen and had a 6-0 lead 39 seconds into the match. Rodriguez would then pin Knutzen at the 2:24 mark, extending the UNC lead to 13-3 at the time.
"I was excited, but it was the game plan the last couple of duals," Rodriguez said. "I was feeling great today. Being in front of a home crowd, I showed what I needed to do. Seeing guys win before me, I feed off them."
Jordan Robison followed suit in the 157 lb match against Spencer Heywood, taking a 4-1 lead after the first period with two late takedowns. Robison added four points in the second period with a takedown, along with an escape and a penalty point on Heywood. Robison added two more takedowns in the third, along with riding time to win 13-3 by major decision over Heywood to establish the 17-3 lead.
"I think this past few weeks off, I've told myself I'm going to fix the things that have been going wrong for me this season," Robison said. "I think the practice I've been putting in is working out. What I did out there is everything we have been practicing and I've fixed those earlier season mistakes. I want to do my best and put on a performance so the guys who wrestle after me can do even better."
Sean Cannon started the winning streak for UNC in the 133 bout against Isiah Delgado. Cannon also started fast with a takedown and a four-point, near fall in the first period. After a scoreless second, Cannon kept his offense going in the third, scoring another takedown and another four-point, near fall. Cannon added the riding time advantage to win 14-1 by major decision.
Chris Sandoval extend UNC's lead to 7-3 with a 7-4 decision win over Dylan Gregerson. Sandoval had three takedowns in the bout and limited Gregerson's scoring to escapes.
No. 16 Rico Montoya had his lead slip away in the opening match at 125 lb, losing to Mitchell Brown, 10-8 by decision.
The Wolverines rally began after the break with three straight major decision wins. No. 9 Demetrius Romero defeated Macoy Flanagan, 13-3 in the 165 lb match, while No. 10 Kimball Bastian defeated Trenton Schultz, 14-5 in the 174 lb bout. No. 26 Will Sumner topped Dalton Robertson at 184 lb, winning 11-2 by major decision.
No. 15 Jacob Seely also had his lead slip away in the 197 lb match. Seely had a 5-2 lead on No. 15 Tate Orndorff going to the third period. A takedown from Orndorff would tie the match at five. Following a Seely escape, Orndorff scored a late takedown to take a 7-6 lead, but Seely's riding time advantage, the match was tied at seven and went to overtime. Orndorff had a takedown on Seely 46 seconds into the match to win 9-7 by sudden victory.
Utah Valley jumped ahead of UNC 19-17.
In the final match of the night, No. 18 Tate Orndorff defeated Robert winters 14-3 by major decision to clinch the victory.
The Wolverines won six matches to defeat the Bears 22-17 on Friday night.
"Its next match up," Nickerson added. "We need to perform better, otherwise, we are going to be in trouble. There is an even better team coming in her Sunday and we need to figure things out quickly."
