@UNCBearsWrestle Heads to Cali for a Pair of Duals

Northern Colorado will face Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield this weekend
Dual season is in full swing for Northern Colorado wrestling, as they travel west for two more duals against Pac 12 opponents. UNC will take on Cal Poly on Friday night and then CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm looking for them to continue to carry that swag they had last weekend," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "I finally saw them have a lot more confidence on the mat. They are a young team so I want to see them continue to grow and mature. If they do that, we will come out on top this weekend."
The Bears will have now faced three Pac 12 schools in row, after hosting Oregon State at Bank of Colorado Arena on Friday. UNC dropped the dual 27-12, winning three matches. Dante Rodriguez made his debut for the Bears with a fall over the Beavers Josh Reyes. Macoy Flanagan and Dalton Robertson each picked up decision wins in their bouts as well.
With the first NCAA coaches' rankings set to be released next week, Rico Montoya and Jacob Seely are in favorable positions to be included in their respective weight classes. Montoya is ranked No. 17 by Trackwrestling.com, InterMat.com, and W.I.N. Magazine. The two-time NCAA qualifier is also listed at No. 19 by both Flowrestling.com and The Open Mat.com. On the season, Montoya has a 9-4 overall record, going 2-3 in dual matches.
For Seely, he earns his highest ranking from The Open Mat where he is No. 11, while being No. 15 by W.I.N. Seely comes in at No. 16 by both Trackwrestling and InterMat, with Flowrestling ranking him at No. 17. Â This season, Seely has recorded a 9-3 overall record, with a 5-1 record in duals and he looks to qualify for the NCAA championships for the second consecutive season.
"I think we match up well against both [teams]," Nickerson added. "I think Rico Montoya is set up for a really good weekend and I expect him to get us started and dominate. I'm looking for some answers in the 141 lb weight class. I'm also looking for 165 and 174 to step up as well. Jacob Seely should have a good weekend. I also want to see a little more consistency out of 157. Dante Rodriguez started out electric and the Bakersfield kids is top 20 in the nation so it's a good chance at seeming some top notch competition."
UNC is 1-2 on the road this season, defeating Hofstra 21-13 back in early December.
Scouting the Mustangs
Cal Poly enters the weekend with a 0-3 record, with all duals taking place at home. The Mustangs dropped their most recent matchup against CSU Bakersfield 24-11, winning three matches. Cal Poly has a young roster this season, with seven of its starters being either freshman or redshirt-freshman. The team has competed in seven tournaments this season, including the Cliff Keen Invitational and Reno Tournament of Champions.
Northern Colorado hosted Cal Poly last season, pulling off a comeback victory over the Mustangs 21-20. The Bears trailed 17-11 in the dual, but won two of the three final matches on bonus points to earn the victory.
"If we get started on the right foot, we can look to go out and dominate," Nickerson said of the Mustangs. "They are a very well coached team. We're going to have to go out and compete."
Scouting the Roadrunners
CSU Bakersfield has a 4-4 dual record on the season, with a 2-0 record at home in the Icardo Center. The Roadrunners are coming off of a 24-11 road win against Cal Poly after winning seven matches. 2019 started well for Bakersfield, as the team placed 10th at the Southern Scuffle, one spot ahead of UNC. The Roadrunners had three placers with Sean Nickell(133) taking fourth, while Dominic Ducharme(184) and Russell Rohlfing(141) both were sixth. Nickell is ranked No. 20 by InterMat and Rohlfing is No. 18 by Flowrestling.
UNC also hosted CSU Bakersfield as part of a tri-meet with Duke last season in Greeley. The Roadrunners topped the Bears 22-11 with UNC winning four matches.
"CSU Bakersfield is a gritty team and they always have been," Nickerson said of the Roadrunners. "We're going to have to get tough with them to come out on top in that dual."
