Northern Colorado plays hard in each set, but Rams held them off
GREELEY, Colo.- Northern Colorado volleyball battled another tough opponent at Bank of Colorado Arena on Tuesday night, with No. 25 Colorado State sweeping the Bears [24-26, 20-25, 15-25]. UNC (1-2, 0-0) mounted a strong comeback in the first set to give the team some momentum. However, CSU stopped comeback attempts in the second and third sets to earn the victory in Greeley.
How it Happened
UNC used early kills from Jadyn McCartney and Lauren Hinrichs that gave the team a 5-3 opening advantage against the Rams. After exchanging points, the Bears lead was down to 7-6 and CSU would go on a 3-0 run to jump in front.
CSU stretched the lead out to 12-8, getting kills from Jessica Jackson and Kirstie Hillyer. The Rams would maintain their advantage throughout the first and extend the lead to five points at 19-14 later in the set.
With the score at 23-18, the Bears offense stepped up and went on a 4-0 run to pull within one of the Rams. UNC picked up kills from Hinrichs, Taylor Muff, and Daisy Schultz. After a CSU point, UNC scored two unanswered to tie the game at 24.
The Rams would score the next two points to take the set 26-24 and go up 1-0 in the match. UNC hit .265 for the set and CSU was slightly ahead with a .275 figure.
The second set opened with both teams running their offense and scoring. UNC and CSU went back-and-fourth and the set was knotted up at six. Hinrichs continued to score at a highly efficient rate.
Three errors by the Rams would help UNC build a 9-7 advantage. CSU responded with a 3-0 run to take the lead back, up one set in the match. The Rams began to pull away for UNC and extended the score to 18-12. The set and the match seemed to be slipping away for the Bears, with CSU holding a comfortable 23-14 lead.
In a similar pattern to the first set, UNC did not go quietly and made the Rams nervous down the stretch. Muff powered the Bears with three kills to give UNC a chance at the end of the set to make a comeback. The Bears had closed the gap to 24-20, but CSU would earn the win on the next point and held a 2-0 advantage over UNC going into the break.
CSU would start off quick in the third set with a 4-1, trying to put UNC away early. The start had been fast for the Rams, but they surrendered their lead just as quick with three consecutive errors.
After giving up the lead, CSU would gradually rebuild it as UNC's offense struggled with errors in the third set. The Bears committed 10 errors in the third after having a combined eight in the first two sets. The lead for CSU grew to 18-8, largely to outside hitter, Jessica Jackson, who scored four kills to build the Ram's advantage.
UNC responded with a 4-1 run, powered by three kills from Kortney Lockey and a service ace from Taylor Els. The Ram's would, however, hold off the Bears, with Jackson providing the clinching kill to give CSU the sweep.

Overall Thoughts
It was a little bit of everything tonight. It started with their aggressive serving and it startled us and I think we took a step back instead of taking of the mindset of we have to be the more aggressive team. We lost our tempo on the first contact that turned into lost tempo on the second contact and our arms were not as fast as we like on the third contact, we just couldn't get into our speed. I thought their serve was a key factor in that.
How did CSU's attack keep the team off guard?
It is three attackers which we knew, but we couldn't slow them down. They have live arms, fast arms. Even out of system they were aggressive. In scout they did not look like that, they were giving easy balls out of system. WE thought we could take advantage of that when they were ripping balls 12 feet off the net and scored way too much on out of system balls.
What do you want the team to take from these first few matches?
There are a lot of positives we can take from these first three matches. Tonight, was better than a practice as we prepare for this weekend. Coming off our Wyoming match we made huge gains in the next week and I hope we can do the same after this match going into next weekend.
Daisy Schultz, Setter
What did CSU do to slow down the attack?
CSU's big block and libero made it hard on us defensively and made it hard to score.
What was working in that first set that ended up going away as the match progressed?
Early in the match we had good tempo and pace, but as it progressed we lost that and it showed.
What can you take from this match to improve?
We can take forward attacking quicker and not reacting to our opponent. We let them go at us and then fought back when it was too late, so starting stronger will help us.
Lauren Hinrichs, Middle Blocker
Challenges from CSU's attack
They always have some really good attackers and will challenge the block like they did tonight. Personally, they challenged my hands a lot and where I think they found success.
How did CSU adjust to your early success on the slide?
CSU was just putting up a bigger block after my early success. It seemed like it was not a priority early on for them and then they started to adjust and put a bigger block on it.
How did serve receiver impact tonight's match?
We did not play with the same energy that we played with this past weekend. We have a lot of work to do to improve but looking forward to getting back on the court and improving tomorrow.
Game Changer
Colorado State was effective on its attack with a .265 attack percentage, while the Bears hit .100 for the match.
