UNC track and field is set for the Big Sky Championships after a solid showing at Air Force
USAFA, Colo. — The Bears stayed in the state this past weekend traveling up to the Air Force Academy for the Air Force Twilight Open. The open was the team's last meet before the Big Sky Championships that begin on Tuesday. After traveling out of state for the past couple weeks it was nice for the Bears to stay in state to have more time to practice and focus on what is coming next.
What Happened
Bailey Sexton came in fourth place with a time of 11.35 in the men's 100-meter dash. Sexton actually tied for fourth place with Trent Holmes, from Air Force, who had the exact same time as him.
For the men's 400-meter run Antoine Coates came in third place with a time of 47.43. Coates, mark in the 400m is a personal best for him. A couple event later, for the men's 800 meters run Jacob Higa came in sixth place with a time of 1:57.04.
Jakeob Tagita dominated the men's triple jump by taking first place with a personal-best mark of 14.77m (48' 5 ½). That jump for Tagita puts him in the top ten for the records book for UNC. Not far behind Tagita was Tyler Thimsen who came in fifth place with an overall mark of 13.16m (43' 2 ¼).
On to the women's side, Samara Lishchynsky who came in second place for the women's 400-meter run. And right behind her in third place was Zoie Campbell with a time of 1:02.29. Lischynsky also ran the 200m dash, finishing with a time of 25.47.
For the women's long jump, UNC had Juliette Cossey in fourth place with a mark of 5.36m (17' 7"), Kylie Chavez in fifth place with a mark of 5.23m (17' 2"), and Ashley Register in sixth place with a mark of 5.20m (17' 0 ¾).
The women almost swept the podium with the triple jump, with Cossey who came in first place with a mark of 11.91m (39' 1"), and Ashley Register who came in second with a mark of 11.62 (38' 1 ½).
What's Ahead?
Northern Colorado's track and field team now heads to the Big Sky Championships hosted by Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. The Championship begins on Tuesday, May 8 with two days of multi-events, before the rest starts on Thursday, May 10.
Northern Colorado looks to solidify its spots in the NCAA Regionals two weeks from now. Alex Wesley looks to be headed that way for the men's 400m dash, with teammate Kyle Thomas looking to join him with a solid performance in Moscow. The men's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams will also look to qualify for the NCAA Regional, as they currently sit just outside the qualifying marks. On the women's side, Cammy Sargent looks for the second straight trip to the NCAA Regional in the 800m race.
