Recap: Big Fourth Leads @NCBearsBaseball Over Seattle
4/7/2018 10:42:00 PM | Baseball
Northern Colorado used a six run fourth to defeat Seattle 7-6 on Saturday
How it Happened
UNC scored first in the third inning when Dean Lawson and Austin Miller reached to start it off. The duo then advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch while Cole Maltese was at bat. Maltese scored Lawson to make it 1-0 on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Seattle responded in the bottom half of the inning with a five-run two-out rally. Austin Lively started it with a triple down the left field line. The next five Redhawks reached base safely also platting five runs during that time.
The duo of Evan Johnson and Tyler Yamaguchi have started plenty of rallies for Northern Colorado this season and did so once again Saturday. Johnson was hit by a pitch and Yamaguchi singled to place a pair of runners on with no outs. Alex Kiel and Lawson walked to load the bases and score a run to make it 5-2. The Bears scored two more runs without a hit to trail by just one, before Matt Burkart singled to tie the game with two outs. Johnson, not only started but finished the rally with a two-run scoring single to lead 7-5.
Seattle never really threatened the rest of the way outside of scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Game Changer
Connor Leedholm, who came in during the third inning for the Bears shut down the Seattle offense pitching the final 6.1 innings allowing just three hits and walking one over it. SU scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, but that's it as he struck out five to earn his second win of the year.
Stat to Know
Northern Colorado's pitching did a good job of not giving up free bases to Seattle on Saturday. The Bears, only walked three Redhawks compared the eight by SU.
Game Notes
- The Bears scored more runs than hits in the game with seven runs on six hits. No player recorded multiple hits in the game.
- Cole Maltese and Evan Johnson each had two RBI in the game, Maltese's both on sacrifice flies and Johnson on the single in the fourth.
