Northern Colorado baseball fell to Sacramento State Friday 5-0.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern Colorado baseball fell in its series-opener to Sacramento State on Friday night 5-0. The Hornets used a pair of home runs and bases loaded single did in the Bears, while the offense struggled to scratch across a run.
How It Happened
Following a Northern Colorado threat in the top of the third that saw Dean Lawson reach via an error and advanced to third before being stranded, PJ Floyd led off the inning with a solo shot to put Sacramento State up 1-0.
The Hornets held on to that 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Outfielder Matt Smith came up with the key hit in the inning, on a two-RBI single to center to make it a 3-0 game and end UNC starter Troy Watson's day.
Vinny Esposito put the game out of reach for a struggling Bears offense in the seventh when he launched a two-run home run to make it 5-0. The game ended that way as UNC's offense was able to just muster three hits.
Game Changer
Sacramento State starter Parker Brahms pitched a strong game against Northern Colorado on Friday night, going seven innings allowing just two hits and no runs while walking three and hitting one batter. His performance on the bump helped guide the Hornets to the win on Friday.
