Northern Colorado baseball fell on a walk-off home run to Chicago State
How It Happened
UNC's offense started its early run scoring with a Jack Pauly leadoff triple in the top of the second. The bases were then loaded with a CSU error and hit by pitch. Alex Kiel brought home the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center brining in Pauley. Tyler Yamaguchi drove in the second run with another sacrifice fly and Austin Miller doubled to make it 3-0.
Pauley, helped kick start another rally in the third with a walk and on a double steal forced another error by Chicago State. He came home to score the second run of the inning on CSU's third error to make it 5-0.
The game stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Cougars cut it to a one-run game. They loaded the bases with one out and the next two batters then reached to score the first two runs of the inning. An RBI double following the pitching change from Keenan Lum to Justin Mulvaney.
Northern Colorado responded with a two run sixth, on a Matt Burkart single and Jack Pauley sacrifice fly, going back up 7-4. The Bears entered the bottom of the eighth up 8-5, but CSU cut it to 8-7 entering the ninth. A leadoff walk came around to tie the game at eight. First basemen Tyler Lowe ended the game with a three-run, walk-off home run to give Chicago State the win.
Game Changer
Relief pitcher Robert Gutierrez came in and quieted the Northern Colorado bats after they scored seven runs on starter Joe Fitka. Gutierrez, pitched 3.2 innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out two.
