GREELEY, Colo. - In their final match of the season, the Bears were defeated by Idaho State 6-1 Saturday at Work Out West Tennis and Fitness Center. The Bengals swept doubles, then took five of six singles matches to seal the victory.
Tristen Bryant-Otake was the lone winner in singles for UNC. At No. 3 singles, she got past Melissa Coburn 6-4, 7-6(2) in straight sets after taking control of the tiebreaker for the second set.
"Today's match was a nice way to finish the season," said head coach Brenda Gallegos. "Once again, a majority of our players showed up and fought hard so we were able to end on a positive note."
The Bears featured a young team in 2018, which included five freshmen. They finished the season 5-16 overall, 1-10 in the Big Sky conference.
"We can see glimpses of hope for the future of the team," Gallegos said. "We are really proud of the overall singles performance and for making the match last as long as possible today. The team gave it their all for the last match of the season."
The Bears biggest win of the season was a 7-0 shutout over CSU-Pueblo on January 20th. They were also able to grab a Big Sky Conference win over Portland State 4-3 on March 18.
Next season, the Bears will have just one senior (Anna Battersby) on their roster and the rest of the roster will all have at least one season of college experience. Soph. Raffa Mora played No. 1 singles for the entire spring.
