OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado women's basketball took home the big hardware Wednesday night when they clinched the Big Sky Regular Season Championship, but now a few more are bringing home some individual hardware as well. The conference announced its All-Conference awards Sunday morning and three Bears were honored in Savannah Smith, Savannah Scott and Kianna Williams.
Smith, was named Most Valuable Player in the conference and earned a spot on first team All-Big Sky. Her dynamic playmaking along with tough defense earned her the award. She finished conference play averaging 19.6 points 3.8 rebounds 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals. She shot an impressive 32.5 percent from 3-point range and made 2.3 3s a game. This is Smith's first Big Sky MVP honor and the second time being on the first team, repeating her feat last year. Smith becomes the second Bear to win the MVP award joining D'shara Strange from the 2014-15 season.
Most Valuable Player was not the only individual award UNC took home on Sunday, senior Kianna Williams won Defensive Player of the Year. Williams is a terror for opponents to scout for game in and game out, guarding every position on the floor. Usually guarding the opponents best player, Williams led UNC in rebounding, blocks and steals in conference play with 6.1 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 1.5 blocks. Williams is not just a one-way player, scoring 8.6 points along with 2.8 assists and a 2.8 assists-to-turnover ratio. The award is Williams first of her career and she joins UNC's Courtney Stoermer (2010-11) and D'shara Strange (2011-12 & 2012-13) to win the award.
Savannah Scott earned herself her second straight All-Big Sky second-team honor. The senior from Campbell, California averaged 16.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Scott finished ninth in field goal percentage in conference games with a mark of 49.4 percent.
