UNC baseball fell to UC Davis Friday afternoon 6-2
DAVIS, Calf. – Northern Colorado baseball dropped its series opener against UC Davis on Friday, falling 6-2. The Bears grabbed the early lead, but four-run fifth and complete game from Matt Blais was too much for UNC to overcome.
How It Happened
After going three up, three down in the first inning Jack Pauley led off the second with a double to right center for UNC. Brett Minnick then singled to put runners on the corners and pressure on the Aggies early one Pauley came home on a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Tyler Yamaguchi that also moved Minnick to second. The Bears made it 2-0 when Alex Kiel singled with two-outs to lead early on.
UC Davis responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the UNC lead in half. The game stayed at 2-1 until UCD put a four-spot up in the fifth. The Aggies tied the game up in that span, but starter Isaac Bracken looked to escape any more damage recording two straight outs with a pop out and fly out. Davis didn't allow that to happen, extending the inning with a walk and pair of singles to score three more runs and end Bracken's day.
With the 5-2 lead, Matt Blais settled into a groove for the remainder of the game allowing just four Bears on the base path the rest of the way while his team added on an insurance run in the sixth to make it 6-2.
Game Changer
Matt Blais took a little to settle into the game Friday, but when he did UNC's batters struggled to put a rally together. Blais earned the complete game win going the nine innings allowing two runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and a walk.
Stat to Know
UC Davis' bats strung together 15 hits in the game as they found the right spots on the field. Everyone in the Aggies starting lineup recorded a hit and four with multi-hit games.
Game Notes
- Alex Kiel continues to be his steady self with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI.
- Dean Lawson joined Kiel with a multi-hit game by going 2-for-3 in the ball game.
- Neither pitching staff gave away many free bases Friday night, combining to walk four batters. UCD walked one and UNC three.
