UNC baseball won game won of its doubleheader Saturday 6-4 ovr UC Davis, will conclude second game tomorrow morning
How it happened
UC Davis looked to jump out to an early lead with a pair of walks to start the game. The Aggies brought home the first run on a productive out, without ever recording a hit in the first.
UNC quickly responded in the second with Jack Pauley and Tyler Yamaguchi each hitting a single to start the inning. Pauley ended up coming home on a Matt Zoba single through the right side and Dean Lawson single to left.
UCD tied the game at two in the third, but once again UNC responded in the top half of the next inning. Alex Kiel and Brett Minnick each singled to reach base to begin the inning. The Aggies defense ended up committing an error on a Zoba bunt allowing Kiel to score and put UNC back up. The game went into a 40-minute rain delay. Following the delay, Cole Maltese stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Maltese delivered right away with a two-run scoring double to right making it 5-2.
The Bears extended the lead to 6-2 when Kiel brought home Pauley to score his second run of the game. UC Davis cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth and the game stayed that way until the ninth. The Aggies loaded the bases with two outs and earned a walk to cut the lead to 6-4 before Connor Leedholm sealed the win with a strikeout.
Game Changer
Jack Pauley was key for UNC in the game one win, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored a stolen base and a walk. He was one of three Bears to record multiple hits, and the lone Bear to score more than once.
Stat to Know
From the cleanup spot through the rest of the order, each batter recorded at least one hit and the four through eight spots scored at least one run in the game.
