Northern Colorado baseball won the first game of the double header 12-7 while dropping the second 11-10
Game 1
Northern Colorado put 11 runs up between the fourth and fifth inning to earn its first win of the year 11-7 in game one of the twin bill.
San Jose State struck first in the game, when Kyle Morrison hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but would not lead again the rest of the way as UNC scored four in the fourth.
Jack Pauley brought home the first run of the inning for Northern Colorado when he doubled to left field allowing Evan Johnson to score from first base. The Bears then took the lead when Matt Burkart smashed the first home run of the year for UNC to left field putting the team up 3-1.
The two-out rally for Northern Colorado continued with Tyler Yamaguchi doubling to left and Jake Garcia walking. Dean Lawson capped off the rally with a single through the left side to make it a 4-1 ball game.
In the fifth, UNC put together an impressive two-out rally to pull away from the Spartans. UNC loaded the bases for Garcia who walked to add to the teams lead at 5-1. The next four Bears reached base safely, with a walk, single and pair of doubles bringing in six more runs make it an 11-1 ball game when the dust settled. Lawson, Maltese and Johnson each recorded a pair of RBI in the inning.
Starter Keenan Lum ended up going six strong innings allowing just the one run on the way to his first win of the season while striking out seven.
UNC added to its lead in the seventh by loading the bases before Jack Pauley brought home a run on a fielder's choice to make it 12-1.
Despite the large deficit, San Jose State never gave in, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut into the Bears lead at 12-7. The bats stayed silent the rest of the way as Northern Colorado won its first win of the 2018 season.
Game 2
Just like game one, game two was not for fans that enjoy pitching duels. Northern Colorado struck first in the game as the team strung together three straight two-out singles with Brett Minnick bringing home Evan Johnson.
The Bears stayed ahead 1-0 until the third when SJSU tied it up scored a two-out run of their own.
A game that looked like a pitcher's duel turned into a pitcher's nightmare in the fifth when the two teams combined for 11 runs. Northern Colorado scored seven of those runs in the top half of the inning.
Alex Kiel, Dean Lawson and Austin Miller loaded the bases with a walk, hit by pitch and walk to begin the inning. A passed ball scored Kiel and on the next pitch, Cole Maltese took the pitch from Nicholas Morales for a ride over the left field wall to put the Bears up 5-1.
Northern Colorado loaded the bases two more times in the inning with Tyler Yamaguchi and Lawson coming up with the run scoring at-bats. Yamaguchi brought in a pair on a single to left center and Lawson walked with the bases full.
Despite giving up the seven runs in the top half of the inning, San Jose's offense responded with four runs of its own in the bottom half. They loaded the bases just like UNC to begin the inning and had a two-RBI single start the rally. The Spartans ended up scoring four runs during the inning on three hits, leaving one on base.
Down 8-5 after the seventh inning stretch, San Jose State's batter got to the UNC bullpen putting up a six spot. The SJSU crooked number came on four hits, four walks and one Northern Colorado error to put them ahead 11-8.
Similar to San Jose State, the Bears did not back down, coming back in the top of the eighth with two runs of their own. UNC scored its two runs on a wild pitch and Yamaguchi single, having the opportunity to push across more runs but left the bases loaded.
The Bears saw the game-tying run reach base in Maltese with two outs in the ninth but were unable to bring him home.
Game Changer
Cole Maltese had a strong day at the plate for UNC going 5-for-8 over the pair of games with three runs scored five RBIs, three walks, a double and a home run. His three-run homer in the first game helped UNC gain the lead and earn its first win of the season.
Stat to Know
Two out rallies were big for Northern Colorado on Saturday. UNC combined for 12 two-out RBI in the twin bill, including 10 in its game one win.
Game Notes
- Both starters for UNC pitched well in Keenan Lum and Aaron Hamilton. Each pitched six innings combining to strike out 14 Spartans and walk just three while giving up six runs.
- Tyler Yamaguchi also had a good day at the plate for UNC going 5-for-8 with a pair of runs scored, three RBI and a couple of singles.
- The two teams combined to walk 29 times in the two games. Nineteen of those walks were drawn by the Bears. Matt Burkart led the team with four.
