Recap: @bearssoftball Bats Come Alive for Pair of Wins
2/10/2018 10:20:00 PM | Softball
Northern Colorado softball rode its bats to big 12-3 and 15-1 win Saturday.
Over the two games, UNC combined for 27 runs on 21 hits. Of the 21 hits, seven were extra base hits. Meanwhile, they held Wright State and IUPUI to just eight hits.
Game 1
UNC's offense wasted no time, getting on the board following a 1-2-3 top half of the first. The Bears' first six batters of the game all reached base safely, pushing across three runs in the process. Eight-hole hitter Madi Schmidt then came through with a two-out, two RBI single to center to put Northern Colorado up 5-0 after the first frame.
While UNC's offense jumped out to the early lead, starter Kelli Kleis silenced the Raiders bats from the circle allowing just one runner to reach base in the first three innings, and that coming on an error.
The Bears' bats came up big again in the third inning when they put another crooked number on the board with seven more runs. Lauren Paige walked and Sophia Taylor singled to put a pair on to begin the inning. Following a fly out, Rachel Johnson delivered her first long-ball of the year for the Bears on a three-run shot to make it an 8-0 game.
Johnson's home run was just the start of the big inning for the Bears. UNC ended up with the bases loaded for the majority of the inning, ending up batting around and pushing across seven runs on four hits, three walks, two hit by pitches and an error.
Wright State tied to string a comeback together in the top of the fourth when the first five batters reached base safely, leading to three runs and Northern Colorado bringing Lauren Paige into the pitching circle. Paige went on to allow just one more hit the rest of the game, as the Bears cruised to the 12-3 win.
Game 2
It was like déjà vu for Northern Colorado against IUPUI. The Bears first seven batters reached base in the bottom of the first leading to six runs. UNC ended up batting around in the inning, scoring eight runs on nine hits to lead the Jaguars 8-0.
The team's bats stayed hot in the second, as UNC had its fourth big inning of the day by scoring five more runs. Freshman catcher Emma Brockmann delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run scoring double, the first double of her career. The Bears recorded just two hits in the inning while scoring the five runs.
With UNC's offense putting up back to back crooked numbers, the pitching duo of Valerie Vidal and Chandler Elsner held the Jaguar's offense to just four hits and a run help the team finish the day 2-0.
What They Said
Head coach Shana Easley
Overall thoughts on the day
"I was really proud of the team effort in today's wins. We were solid up and down the line up with almost all of our hitters getting quality contact on the ball. We are looking forward to carrying the momentum we generated today into tomorrow's game against DePaul."
Game Changer
Jordyn Wiatrak had a strong day at the ballpark going a combined 4-for-8 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored. Her performance in the games helped UNC jump out to early leads as Mady Young and Kenzie Kudrna set the table in the leadoff spot and two-hole for the Bears.
Stat to Know
Northern Colorado had an impressive 11-to-4 walk to strikeout ratio on the day. UNC showed good patience at the plate including never striking out against IUPUI.
