UNC goes 3-2 in its opening weekend of the 2018 season
ROSEMONT, Ill.- The bats went silent for Northern Colorado softball, as DePaul shut them out 2-0 in the final game in the Total Control Softball Tournament. DePaul pitcher Missy Zoch no-hit the Bears and limited them to a single baserunner.
The baserunner for UNC came in the first at-bat, when Mady Young reached on an error by Zoch. Jordyn Wiatrak hit into a fielder's choice, with Young being tagged out at second base. Wiatrak was then be caught stealing to end the inning.
The Blue Demon hitters provided all the offense Zoch would need in the third inning. Angela Scalzitti led-off the inning with a double off Valerie Vidal down the left field line. Vidal was able to get two outs after the hit, but Katie Polucha came up with a clutch double to left center that scored Scalzitti for the first run of the game. Morgan Greenwood punched a single into center field to bring Polucha into score and DePaul had a 2-0 lead over UNC.
Vidal was able to keep UNC in the game, stranding seven Blue Demon hitters on base for the game. DePaul did have runners at second and third in the seventh inning, but Vidal worked her way out of the jam when Jessica Cothern grounded out to shortstop.
Vidal pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits, while striking out three and no walks. The solid outing from Vidal was overshadowed by Zoch stifling the UNC hitters, retiring 18 in a row to complete the no-hitter, while striking out five and walking none.
In Their Words
"Val looked good in the circle today. She was able to work out of several pressure situations with runners in scoring position and get us outs tto limit their scoring. Our offense was so hot and cold this weekend that we need to make sure we are consistently being tough outs throughout each game and making adjustments to pitching as needed." -Shana Easley, Head Coach
