Northern Colorado women's basketball looks to end the non-conference season on a high note against BYU
Coming off of back-to-back one-possession wins over SMU and Chattanooga, Northern Colorado women's basketball closes out its non-conference season with a trip to BYU. The Bears and Cougars are set for a noon tip-off in Provo.
Opening Tip
• It was another close win for Northern Colorado last time out, winning in overtime over Chattanooga at home 68-65.
• All but one of UNC's games this year have been decided by eight points or less.
• Alexis Chapman scored a career-high 23 points in the win over Chattanooga, including making five 3-pointers.
• Savannah Smith returned to action for the team, scoring 20 points against Chattanooga.
• Ali Meyer stretched her streak of consecutive double-digit rebound games to six, with 15 against UTC.
• BYU is coming off of a 51-42 win over Colorado State last week at home.
• On the year, BYU is 7-3, including 3-1 at home, with the lone loss coming to California.
• The Bears are the third Big Sky school the Cougars will face this season, defeating Eastern Washington and falling to Southern Utah.
Last Time Out
UNC grinded out a 68-65 overtime win over Chattanooga to close out the home portion of the non-conference slate. The Bears were paced by Alexis Chapman's career-high 23 points, while Savannah Smith hit some key free throws late as she scored 20. Late game defense was key again for Northern Colorado as they held Chattanooga to one made field goal in the overtime period.
Scouting the Cougars
BYU comes into Friday afternoon's game with a guard heavy team as the trip of Shaylee Gonzales, Paisley Johnson and Brenna Chase lead the way in scoring all over 10 points a game. Gonzales leads the way with 17.5 ppg and is coming off a WCC Player of the Week honor after scoring 29 against CSU on Saturday. She was just one of four Cougars to score in the game.
The Cougars like to shoot the 3-pointer, averaging 21.3 attempts per game, but only making 6.2 a game. BYU does a good job of grabbing their misses though, with 14.0 offensive rebounds a game.
On the defensive end of the court, Brigham Young is holding opponents to 62.7 points a game and 37.6 percent shooting. The team overall, outrebounds its opponents 40.9 to 38.3 a game.
History against BYU
Northern Colorado and BYU faced each other a lot in the early days of the program's beginnings, but went on a break from 1979 until last season. The Bears won the most recent game in the series to pull with in one game of evening the series at 3-4. UNC has never won in Provo.
Against the WCC
UNC has played against teams from the West Coast Conference 28 times
before going 13-15 in those games. The Bears have already beat on WCC team, winning at San Francisco in November.
On This Date
The Bears are 5-3 when playing on December 21, but looking to end a two-game losing streak on the date. The team last played on the date in 2015 falling at Grand Canyon.
What's Ahead?
The 2018-19 Big Sky season tips off after the holiday break with UNC looking to be a top the standings again this season as they host Sacramento State and Portland State on December 29 and 31, respectively.
