Northern Colorado dropped its final dual of the road trip to Columbia, 19-13
NEW YORK, NY- Northern Colorado wrestling kept fighting until the end against Columbia, but dropped the dual 19-13 Monday evening. UNC won four matches, but could not overcome the deficit to complete the comeback.
"Overall, we out-wrestled [Columbia] I thought," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "Where they beat us, they were tougher than us. I'm really proud of our upper weights [184-285] for sweeping the weekend, 9-0."
The dual started in the 125 weight class, with No. 11 Rico Montoya facing off against Joe Manchio. Montoya was in control the entire match, leading 9-2 after two periods and finishing with a 12-4 major decision win over Manchio and gave UNC a 4-0 lead.
Sean Cannon met Matt Kazimir in the 133 lb class, dropping the bout 11-1 in a major decision and the Lions tied the dual up at four.
Owen Lamb went against Danny Fongaro in the 141 match and Lamb was off to a good start with a 4-1 lead in the first period. Fongaro closed the gap in the second period to 5-3 and exploded in the third with eight points to win 11-5 by decision. Columbia was now in front 7-4.
Mason Hulse battled Riley Jacops in the 149 weight class, starting out with a 2-1 lead in the first period. Jacops would tie the match at two in the second period and then pulled ahead in the third to win 7-4.
UNC trailed 10-4 as Jordan Robison faced Danny Reed in the 157 lb match. Robison trailed 0-4 after the opening period and 2-7 after the second. Reed held on to win 11-5 by decision over Robison and the Lions continued to extend their lead, now up 13-4.
Macoy Flanagan took on Laurence Kosoy in the 165 lb weight class and Flanagan would score an early takedown on Kosoy, but trailed 2-3 after the first period. Kosoy extended his lead to 6-2 after the second period and went on to win 11-4 by decision. Columbia was now leading 16-4.
Sethan Bogulski would face Max Elling on the mat and trailed 4-1 after the first period. The score was 5-1 after the second period, but Bogulski mounted a furious rally in the third period to the match at seven. Elling had the riding time advantage and was able to hold off Bogulski for the 8-7 decision win and the deficit for the Bears grew to 19-4.
Dalton Robertson battled Brian Bonino in the 184 lb bout to try and stem the momentum. Robertson had a takedown of Bonino in the first period and maintained the 2-0 lead through the second. At the end of the match, Robertson added the riding time point to win 3-0 by decision and UNC cut the lead to 19-7.
No. 14 Jacob Seely went against Sam Wustefeld at 197 lb and Seely lead 2-1 after the first period. Seely added to his lead in the second period for a 4-2 advantage. Seely would close out Wustefeld and remain undefeated on the season (5-0) with a 9-3 decision win. The Bears were into double-figures, trailing 19-10.
In the final match of the day, Robert Winters Jr. faced Danny Conley in the 285 match. Winters Jr. trailed 2-3 after the first period but rallied to win 6-4 by decision.
