Northern Colorado lost its dual against the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon, 47-0
It was a difficult Sunday afternoon for Northern Colorado wrestling as they hosted No. 3 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys defeated the Bears 47-0, scoring bonus points in each of the 10 matches.
"They are obviously a really tough team and we are a very young team," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "I expected more fight, especially this time of year. There needed to be more of an urgency to go out and win rather than just survive. That's something we will continue to work on over the break."
The dual started in the 149 lb weight class as Mason Hulse faced Kaden Gfeller. The match ended in the second period as Gfeller earned a 20-2 tech fall over Hulse. Oklahoma St. opened with a 5-0 lead.
Jordan Robison went against Andrew Shomers in the 157 lb weight class. In the third period, Shomers picked up a four-point, near-fall to win a 17-2 tech fall against Robison and extend the team's lead to 10-0.
Macoy Flanagan battled Chandler Rogers in the 165 lb weight class, dropping the bout 18-3 by tech fall in the third period. OSU was now up 15-0.
Now in the 174 lb weight class, Sethan Bogulski took on Jacobe Smith. In the second period, Smith would pin Bogulski at the 3:33 mark of the match and the Cowboys lead grew to 21-0.
Dalton Robertson faced off against Bear Hughes in the 184 lb weight class. Robertson trailed 1-4 after the two periods and Hughes would secure the win in the third with a reverse, a takedown, and a four-point, near fall to win 12-2 by major decision. The deficit was up to 25-0 for UNC at the mid-way point in the dual.
Jacob Seely went against Dakota Geer in the 197 lb weight class. Seely was down 2-4 after the first period and 2-9 after the second. Geer ended with a 13-2 major decision win over Seely to extend OSU's lead to 29-0.
In the 285 lb weight class, Robert Winters Jr. battled Derek White and dropped the bout 17-2 tech fall in the second period. The Cowboys had a 34-0 lead.
Rico Montoya was up against Nick Piccininni in the 125 lb weight class. Montoya trailed Piccininni 6-0 after the first period and 0-7 after the second. In the third period, Montoya scored a takedown on Piccininni, but he responded quickly with his own takedown. Piccininni won 11-2 by major decision for a 38-0 Cowboy lead.
Sean Cannon faced Daton Fix in the 125 lb match and Fix would pin Cannon at the 2:54 mark. OSU lead 43-0.
In the final bout of the day, Owen Lamb went against Kaid Brock. Lamb trailed 0-2 after the first period and would lose 10-2 by major decision against Brock.
Oklahoma State won the dual with a 47-0 win against UNC.
"This is a tough sport and we need to do everything right," Nickerson added. "I don't think we have committed to do everything right. I don't know if we have sacrificed enough as a team and individuals to really do what it takes to win at this level. Hopefully the guys will go home and do some self-evaluating and really sacrifice to really compete at this level. The team needs to buy into what we want as a program. I trust my assistant coaches; they're the best out there. They know what it takes to get these guys over the hump and buy in."
