LARAMIE, Wyo. – In a game featuring two of the nation's top 20 scorers, it was the Bears newcomers who helped UNC pull away for its second-straight win at the Arena-Auditorium, 85-80.
Wyoming made a valiant rally in the final 30 seconds when the nation's 11th leading scorer, Justin James, hit a couple three balls but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead UNC built throughout the second half.
Jordan Davis came in as the 17th highest scorer in all of college basketball, he got his 21 points, but when he went to the bench with four fouls the Bears built a lead on the back of Bodie Hume. The freshman from Sterling knocked down a triple that gave UNC a 55-52 lead, on the ensuing possession Hume found the arc in transition and hit once again. Coming out of the under eight timeout, Hume stepped up and knocked down yet another triple and when Trent Harris followed with a three of his own, UNC went up 64-56.
"I just took the open shots I had," said Hume. "I'm guessing they didn't have in the scouting report that I could shoot like that because I have been struggling a little this season. But, I have been putting the time to fix my footwork and I feel like it has helped me."
Cole Bergan came up with a big steal near the timeline and found Harris for a fast break layup and then Harris came right back and hit yet another three-ball to put the Bears up 76-68 with 2:20 to play.
"We were just trying to find good shots," said Harris. "We had a lot of people step and we did a good job of moving the ball in the second half."
The Arena-Auditorium is one of the toughest buildings in college basketball to play in. Wyoming had an overall record of 414-141 heading into this season and 228-38 vs. non-conference teams. Last season, UNC snapped an 80-year losing streak in Laramie and on Saturday became the first non-conference team to win in constitutive seasons in the Double A. Only twice before had a visiting non-conference team won consecutive visits to the Dome of Doom, Southern Illinois in 2003 and 2005 and Nebraska way back in 1983 and 85.
BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX SCORE
- Hume scored a team-high 23 points added five rebounds and had a new single-game school record six blocks.
- Harris finished with 13 and Kai Edwards added 10.
- Davis finished with a double-double adding 11 rebounds to go with his 21 points.
- For the sixth time, this season UNC outrebounded its opponent, this time 39-33.
- This was the first Bears win of the season when they scored less than 88 points.
SCHEDULE SAYS
UNC has 10 days off for finals before they return to Bank of Colorado Arena on Dec. 11 to take on Johnson and Wales.
