@UNCBearsVB Starts Fast But Drops Second Match to Bengals

Northern Colorado played better against Idaho State, but can't play consistent enough to win
It was a similar result to the first match between the two teams, as Idaho State defeated Northern Colorado volleyball, 3-1 [25-19, 17-25, 23-25, 13-25]. UNC's offense scored, but could not avoid errors that the Bengals used to their advantage.
"The first set was different, but last three sets were almost identical to how we played them on the road," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. ".The scores were probably similar to the first match. We have to be able to sustain the high level of play even when they make plays or we make errors. That can't tank us mentally. We were too high error and we struggled in serve reception. We could not get our first contact going to use our middles enough and had to set our left sides."
Outside hitter Taylor Muff scored 17 kills, while hitting .429 in the match and committing only two errors. Muff also added 15 digs.
"The last few games I haven't been as effective and this was one of the games I told myself that I had to play good and that's what fueled me," Muff said. "We need to be in the mindset of attack and also staying low error. In the first set, we were low error. Idaho State is low error team and they got back to that in the last three sets. We need to focus on our side of the net and being more balanced as an offense, with all five hitters scoring well."
Kortney Lockey and Lauren Hinrichs were also in double-figures with 10 kills each.
"It was a good start. We played low error and consistent in set one. When adversity hit, we kind of crumbled," Oates added. "We made some pushes, but what has to fixed has to happen in practice and that's on me. We have to get better because I didn't feel like we competed well tonight. We tried hard but that's different than competing for a win."
UNC hitting was highly effective, with a .417 attack percentage in the first set. The Bears scored 18 kills and only had three errors. They held Idaho State to a .176 attack percentage to win the set.
In the second set, UNC had a .154 attack percentage and committed seven errors, while the Bengals found their groove with a .308 attack percentage and 16 kills.
The third set was a battle between the two teams, with 11 ties for the most competitive set of the night. Idaho State separated from the Bears with a 20-13 lead, but UNC would mount a rally to get back in the set. A 5-0 run from the Bears brought the score to 20-18, powered by an ace from Lockey and kill from Jadyn McCartney. UNC tied the match at 22 after two kills from Muff and a Bengal attack error. After Idaho State scored to take the lead, Lauren Hinrichs tied the match up at 23 with a kill. The Bengals would score the next two points with kills from Abby Garrity and Raegan Steiner to win the set 25-23.
Idaho State was in control in the fourth set, hitting .250 with 13 kills. UNC struggled with nine attack errors and six kills. The Bengals won the set 25-13 and secured the 3-1 match win.
UNC finished with a .182 attack percentage, scoring 52 kills and having 23 attack errors. Idaho State hit .220 in the match with 54 kills and 19 errors.
