UNC women's basketball started strong and never looked back, defeating South Dakota School of Mines 71-39
Northern Colorado women's basketball returned to the hardwood Friday night in an exhibition game against South Dakota School of Mines, defeating the Hardrockers 71-39 inside Bank of Colorado Arena. The Bears started the game on a 12-0 run and led 21-2 after the first quarter to get all the separation they needed.
All eight Bears to play in the game scored at least four points, and all five starters finished the night with at least eight points.
Savannah Smith led all players with 16 points including going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She added in seven assists, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Two other Bears also scored in double figures with Alexis Chapman's 12 and freshman Micayla Isenbart's 11.
It was not just Northern Colorado's offense that played well, shooting 45.2 percent, but the defense as well, holding South Dakota School of Mines to 28.6 percent. The first and third quarter was really impressive holding them to 1-of-7 shooting and 2-for-14, respectively.
What They Said
Head Coach Jenny Huth
Overall thoughts
"In the first quarter, I thought we did a really good job sticking to the game plan. We saw some glimmers of great plays and great basketball out there. It was really fun to play someone other than ourselves. We just need to take care of the ball and play a little bit sharper on the defensive end and we will be heading in a really good direction."
How the offense flowed
"I liked the way we pushed it in transition and our player and ball movement. We were a little sloppy with some turnovers, but overall it was a good start."
What the team should take from tonight into the Colorado game
"One thing we did really well is lock into our game plan which we will need to do. Colorado is really experienced at the guard spot and so are we so that will be a fun match up. Their post players like to shoot the three and we got a taste of that tonight too, with is helpful. Going in with a good mindset believing we can do this and chopping up the game to possession by possession it's going to be really fun."
