Northern Colorado fell to Northern Arizona in another five-set battle
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.- It was another competitive match between Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona, but the Lumberjacks were able to top the Bears in five sets [22-25. 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 6-15].
"We played well and at a high level," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "This is a step forward for us to prepare for the tournament. There is some small tweaking and refinements that we need to make, but it's not big things. I like the progress that we made. Kortney was very effective and I loved how aggressive she was. There was only one stretch were our whole team was tentative, otherwise we played aggressive. We have to get a little better in serve receive and get more aces, while defending key matchups. But this was a step forward for us tonight." Â
The match went back-and-forth as both teams were able to find the open lanes to score. UNC tallied 72 kills for their second highest total of the season.
UNC was bolstered by a big night from Kortney Lockey, who had 24 kills, the most by a Bear this season. Lockey was also efficient with a .290 attack percentage, with six errors on 62 attempts.
NAU's outside hitters Kaylie Jorgenson and Heaven Harris, were productive themselves, each with 19 kills.
The tone of the match was apparent in the first set, with each team scoring 14 kills. NAU won the first set, 25-22, riding five kills from both Jorgenson and Harris, while hitting .235 as a team. Lockey scored five kills for the Bears, while Brittany Lawrence added four.
The Bears offense was on another level in the second set, thanks to Lockey's seven kills and a .297 team attack percentage.
Jorgenson powered the Lumberjacks in set three, with eight kills. Lockey kept it interesting with six of her own, but could not match Jorgenson.
After trailing two sets to one, UNC put on a strong performance in the fourth set to force a fifth. As a team, the Bears hit .310 and Taylor Muff lead the way with six kills in the set.
UNC could not carry over its fifth set performance from the previous night, struggling with a .087 attack percentage that contributed to the 15-6 win for the Lumberjacks and the 3-2 match victory.
The Bears, as a team, hit .235 in the match, while NAU recorded a .274 percentage.
