@UNC_MensGolf Prepared to take on field at CU Invitational
9/24/2017 4:51:00 PM | Men's Golf
ERIE, CO - Men's golf will be back on the course Monday at the Colorado National Golf Club for the 8th Annual Mark SImpson Colorado Invitational. UNC will be one of 19 teams competing in this years field. The 54-hole tournament will take place over two days with 108 players competing. The Bears have finished in the top half of both tournaments they've competed in so far this season, their best being a 7th place finish at the Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs.
A pair of upperclassmen have led the way this season. Senior Andrew Romano has shot par or better in four of his six rounds, his best being a five-under par round at the Falcon Invite. Romano is averaging a score 71.33 to lead the Bears. He has one top 10 finish, a tie for 7th at the Falcon Invite. Right on his heels is junior Joshua Matz who is averaging a score of 71.5. Matz has been ultra-steady this season, with his best round of two-under par coming at last week's Ram Masters in Fort Collins. That performance was good enough to tie him for 12th place. In six rounds, Matz has not shot higher than a 73 this season.
Sophomore Coby Welch is also off to a strong start averaging 72.5. Welch is looking to find more consistency as the season goes along, but he showed how good he can be shooting a school record 63 at the Falcon Invite. Welch's best finish was a tie of 10th at the Falcon Invite.
Senior Sam Marley has a scoring average of 74.83. His best round was a 69 at last week's Ram Masters, as well as his best finish, a tie for 42nd overall.
Freshman Marcus Tait is averaging 77.16 with his top round being a two-over par 74.
